Question 4L60-E Rebuild?

About how hard is it to rebuild the 4l60e? I want to get the TCI pro overhaul kit and a 2400 stall converter, and I don't want to pay to have it installed if I can do it myself. I do have mechanical experience, I'm a marine technician. I've rebuilt lower units on outboards, and Borg-Warner velvet drive transmissions in inboard boats. But I've never even thought about tearing down and rebuilding and automotive transmission.

Your not thinking of buying a TCI converter, are you? Hopefully not, and a 2400 is not worth putting in, even if the car is stock. IMO

If your building it for a near stock application and have lots of time and patience and follow instructions you should be able to do it. Just dont tear into it blind Read the manual several times before you even start. Now if you "need the car" Daliy driver gotta have dont even attemp it just get a trans.

No, I don't want a TCI converter, They're way too expensive for me. What stall do you think I should get for an otherwise stock car?

If you think the TCI converter is too expensive for you, noone here is going to be recommending anything in your price range.

TCI is considered bottom of the barrel around here.

You might wanna consider an Edge converter too at www.edgeracingconverters.com. They'll build you a converter for whatever stall & STR you want and the tech support guy will work with you as to which stall/str is best for your application.

As for rebuilding the transmission yourself, it might be best to pay a professional to rebuild it such as CPT if you intend to put it under some track abuse. The ppl that have been working with the 4L60E's for a while know the tricks to make these things last and are less likely to overlook somethin. Though if your just doing a stock rebuild, with your mechanical experience I'm sure it'll be easy enough.

Thanks for the link. I think I will get one of their converters. I'm having a hard time finding a 2400-2800 stall for an LT1 car for some reason, and they look to be the best bet. As far as the rebuild, There are a few shops here in Orlando that specialize in f-bodies, so I'm gonna go ask some questions. I getting some great advice on this website too. Thanks guys!
