4.10's
a couple of my friends have them.. one in a 97 WS6 M6 and holly **** they make a world of difference, and didn't really hurt the gas to much..the other guy has them in a A4 Firehawk and he likes them around town but ****ing hats them at high constant speed cuase he raps the hell out of the motor and uses alot more gas.. he should have went 3.73 in tha auto.. i say 4.10's in 6 speeds, and 3.73's in autos.. hope that helps..
I was looking into the 4:10's for my A4 so i am curious to see some more opinions. I rarely drive the freeway so it may not make a difference. Does it cause traction problems? My rear end breaks loose when it shifts into 2nd and if i am not going straight on dry roads it kicks the rearend out. I have the 3:42 in there now. Also is there a guide on how much the 1/4 mile gains are for both the 3:73 & 4:10.
If your getting 4.10s for faster launching.. bad idea...
If you compare a 4.10 ring and pinion vs a 3.42 or 3.23.. you lose ALOT of meat by going 4.10
There is alot less contact between the ring and pinion the further you go. I compared my 2.73s vs my 3.42s vs a buddies 4.10 .. omg! they didn't seem like they went in the same rear-end they were so much different sized!
Main cause of failure in 10-bolts in the ring and pinion lose contact...if you got an A4, get a high stall converter before going beyond a 3.73.

So your saying this why? because they are weaker? With a cammed car 4.10's will help you get out of the hole quicker, i am in need of such gears, lol but yeah they are a lot weaker than the 3.42's so idk if its even worth going this way in a 7.5" 10 bolt

if your runnig a cam with a A4 i dont recomend 4.10's.. im running a cam with 3.73's in a A4 and i love it, i just really need a stall.. but if you did the 4.10's yor going to spin a **** load more than you already do.. you would almost have to go from idle and pedal all the way into second before you could put her to the floor and you would probably still breake loose.. i say stay with 3.73's in a A4 and stall it.. it's a good combo..
4.10's are a great ratio for either an M6 or an A4. Enough of this "don't go beyond 3.73's for an A4" crap!!
I've had both, there's really not much difference. If you can't get traction with 3.73's ... you need tires. My car would dead hook with the 4.10's to the point I realized I STILL needed a stall.
To the guy with A4/3.42's ... you're probably better off getting a converter before putting even lower gears in ... A) because you'll find you may still want one anyway, B) if there is any truth to 4.10's being weaker than 3.42's, well, I guess you'll be "safer" that way?!
To the original thread starter ... I can only "assume" you've got an M6, because "most" guys don't talk about 4.10's for their A4. Compared to the stock 3.42's, they will really wake the car up and make it a lot more fun to drive
.
Are 4.10's really "weaker" than higher ratios?
Maybe ... I dunno. But there are plenty of guys running them and NOT breaking them, and there are plenty of guys who break the factory gears ... so it's a crap shoot either way. If you don't want to worry about busting the rear end, A) don't beat on the car off the line (defeating the purpose of what an F-body is for!!
) or B) save up for the illustrious 12-bolt or 9"
