350 or lt1 and t-5 for roadracing

ok so were building a $500 road race car. its an 88 camaro with no motor or trans. i think we will put a small block 350 or an lt1 if we can find one cheep. but I need some info on trans and theres no way a t56 is in the budget so what are my options? I understand a t5 wont hold up to v8 drag launching but what about road racing? any help would be great thanks. also you can find info on the racing at chumpcar.com

T5 is fine at the $500.00 level. Some classes require you to run a 305.
