1998-2002 driveshaft question

Is the driveshaft the same in all stock LS1 vehicles? I'm going to replace my 1998 10 bolt with a 10 bolt from a 2001 trans am, a friend of mine said that some of the driveshafts were steel and then later switched to aluminum. Will this affect me when I replace the 10 bolt?

Re: 1998-2002 driveshaft question

It makes no difference if its steel or aluminum they are the same. But my choice would be the LS1 aluminum dr shaft.

Re: 1998-2002 driveshaft question

The alluminum ones are lighter, and sometimes reduces vibration. Otherwise, they are the same.

Re: 1998-2002 driveshaft question

Unless there was a mix-up at the factory, ALL LS1 6-speeds got aluminum shafts, and the 3.23 geared autos got aluminum as well. Only 2.73 geared autos got the steel shaft.

AFAIK, LT1's all got steel, unless they had the 1LE package?

steel or aluminum....doesn't matter...they are all interchangable.

even from the 3rd gens, the LT1s, the v6s and the LS1s....all interchangable.

No... the 1993-97 V6 models have a two-piece driveshaft, with a center support bearing bolted to the torque arm. They might "fit", but I wouldn't suggest putting one of those in a V8.....

Re: 1998-2002 driveshaft question

Are you asking why the V6's came with a 2-piece driveshaft? I believe it was to eliminate some harmonics that resulted from a combination of the V6 firing pattern and a straight shaft. 93-97 V6 owners have been know to swap in one-piece shafts with no problems, though.
