10-bolt spool & mini-spool question (basic rearend knowledge)

hey guys, i recently broke my posi. the spider gears are worn down badly. i am waiting on finishing up my 9" setup so i dont want to put any money into this rear end. however, if im going to weld up the spiders, i might as well spend the $75 or so and get a spool to save some weight. here is my question...

if i use a spool, it replaces the entire carrier. correct? could i remove my carrier and install the spool without having to reshim it?

assuming i would have to have it reshimmed, what about a minispool? that still utilizes the carrier housing. right? so would i be saving weight there? how much?
