When in the 1/8 is roll cage needed?
#2
A roll cage is required in cars running 10.99(*6.99)or quicker or any car exceeding 135 mph. In full bodied cars with unaltered firewall, floor, and body (from firewall rearward, wheeltubs permitted), running between 10.00 (*6.40)and 10.99 (*6.99), roll bar permitted in place of cage. In convertibles running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker or exceeding 135 mph, roll cage required.
Asterick * indicates 1/8th mile equivalent.
Straight from the 2003 rulebook!

NHRA says you need a roll bar at 11.99. IHRA says 11.50. The roll bar ET for the 1/8 mile is 7.49. Convertibles need one at 8.59
My car only has a 6 point bar. The floor and firewall are unaltered (as mentioned above) and is good to 10.0. I still may install a full cage just to stiffen the chassis some more.
You must refer to the proper terminology. It seems everyone considers any sort of rollover protection a "cage".
A roll bar consists of a minimum of a main hoop and 2 support bars going to the back. To be legal, it also needs a driver side door bar making it a 5 point roll bar. Most people also install the passenger side bar. The roll bar may also have support bars running from the sides of the main hoop, down towards the center of the car mounting by the driveshaft tunnel. This now becomes an 8 point roll bar.
A cage is any combination of above (except 4 and 5 point) plus has a roof hoop and a-piller supports. This totally encloses the roof in case of a roll over. Cages can expand with even more mounting points. Typical cages are 8-12 points. If it doesn't have a roof hoop and a-piller bars then it's not considered a "cage"

The original post asked the question: "When in the 1/8 is a cage needed?" I provided the NHRA rules for a roll cage.

Yep I have gotten thrown for running 9.60-9.90's w/o a full cage. We do have a 6 point in my Dad's Impy but it runs 9.90's on the brakes on a good nite. I ran a 9.70@142mph last time out with it and the tech guy told me slow it down or go home. So on the next pass the car left harder and went 6.02@108mph in the 1/8th so I jammed on the brakes about 100' before the finish line the car still ran 9.96@117mph. We had to go home My car runs 12.3's on motor and deep 11's on the gas but I haven't been able to push it b/c no rollbar I run till the 1/8th on n2o and the car goes 11.60's then they say don't run anymore 11's. I am thinking about doing a bar in my car and finishing off the cage in my Dad's Impy so we can have some more fun.
