Wheelstand gimmick?

Over a case of beer last night, some coworkers and I were arguing physics.

If you had ~400ish HP, some huge drag radials, a lightened front end, and about 400lbs of weight in the trunk, aft of the rear tires, could a nasty 6k rpm clutch drop produce a gimmick wheelstand?

Obviously, a better clutch, and a 12 bolt would be required.

I said no. I think the suspension would half to be setup specially for it. I don't think a stock style suspension could hold up.

back years ago, a guy form Siler City had a bbc chevelle with about 350# of cement bags in the trunk, nice wheel stands
he bracket raced at Piedmont, automatic and slicks,@ 7.40s in the 1/8, if I remember correctly

look at the camaro in F+F 4 pulled the wheels on dirt

That is what got us discussing it in the first place. We were wondering what kind of special effects they used to get the car to pull the wheels like that.

I'm sure the cars in those movies were not running 7.40's in the 1/8, so I'm guessing they had slicks and a whole lot more than 350lbs in the trunk.

There is a video of one of the races where a car pulls the wheels up. as it passes you can clearly see a large weight box about 2 feet behind the rear bumper. The weight does not need to be in the car. in fact, the further behind the car it is the easier it is to pull the from up with less weight. You would have to figure out the angle of the box set, taking into account the wheels being the fulcrum. then you would have to know the weight of the car in front of it. (more specifically where most of the weight is I believe).

Since the cars doing those things are completely gutted for the most part, the weight is going to be pretty much the stuff under the hood. Probably take all of 350 - 400lbs in the weight box 2 feet off the back bumper to get it to pop up. Just off setting the weight of the engine / trans just enough so it does take a little power to pull the wheels up.

haha. Great special effects.

I wanna know how easy it would be to pull the wheels without help from outside the car. With DR's, a light front end, and as much heavy weight as possible in an Fbod trunk, I wanna know if it would do it without completely crushing the rear suspension.

A good race car will have an almost 50/50 weight ratio. A street car is very nose heavy. Wheel standers are very rear heavy allowing them to easily pull the front wheels with very little effort.

Now with torque, traction and a good chassis setup, even a nose heavy pickup truck can pull the front wheels like a superstock car.

The car used in the movie is a replica.

But the real one is more than capable of doing a wheelstand
