What can I expect from a dyno tune?

Most of you have read the thread I started about Joe Overton and this camshafts. I've talked to him and he says that I should be running 11.5-11.4 @ around 118 mph with my setup. I'm currently running in the 11.8-11.7 @ 112.5 mph, but the car is running on the mail order tune for my previous cam. Joe believes that there is alot to be gained in the tune and says that he has seen an LS1 go from 11.3's to 10.8's just on tuning. What I'm wanting to know is if it's realistic to think that a dyno tune will give me the ET/mph that I'm suppose to be running or should I be looking for another problem?

Randy, its hard to say. I don't know your setup. My 383 was running 11.50 at 118mph (as always) this past weekend. DA 2000', race weight 3600lbs, shifting at 6400, 2800 stall, 27x11.5-15 hoosiers, and a rich tune. I assume your a lot lighter and have more converter so I think you should go a bit faster. Joe has a ton of hard earned knowledge. I would agree with him and get it dyno tuned. I guess you already checked all the mechanical gremlins like wires, fuel pressure, rocker adjustment, etc.

Kazman, my car weights about 3400 lbs with me in it and I'm running a 4000 converter. I really hope the dyno tune does the trick and I don't have a preblem with the converter or my heads, because it's really starting to **** me off that I can't run what other guys with similar setup run. Another thing, how weird is it that my car ets so well for no more mph than it runs?

I can't really comment on what your car might gain from a dyno tune with your combo. But when I had the heads/cam/headers done on my car it had a mail order tune by supposedly one of the best in the country at the time. When I had Jeff Creech do a dyno tune it picked up 15 rwhp with no other changes to the car. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect 2-3 tenths better ET from your car with the much better cam - if everything is how it should be.

I would say having a good dyno tune done would be the first place to start. If that doesn't do it, it would be safe to assume you have another problem. A good dyno tune should include monitoring fuel pressure and all the other parameters, so something may show up while it's being done, or the tune just might do the trick

Mark, I hope it does the trick. I don't really want to have to spend alot more money right now, and now that I think about it I don't guess I'm asking for to much in 2-3 tenths. I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best. After I get done with the dyno tune I'm planning to head on down to rockingham and run the points race that night, are you going? If not I'll post my results and keep everybody up to speed.

Randy, is it possible that your over reving your engine? I have 4.11 gears and 27" rear tires. I know Joe O cans like to rev but maybe your going past your peak hp? Or maybe your running out of fuel? The dyno will tell the tale.

My first break in pass with the new engine I shifted at 6000 and left off at the 1000' mark. Car went 11.62 at 101mph.

Kazman, I very well could be overreving my engine, and your right the dyno will tell the tale. Once on the dyno I can see where the hp/tq peaks are to optimize my shifts and not to mention get the timing and a/f ratio right. Also it will tell me if the heads are giving up at higher rpms and if the converter is junk. I'm just ready to get it done so I can go racing.

Unfortunately, no. I'm broke. If things don't pick up pretty soon I don't know what I'll do. Sell the car I guess

Let us know what it does.

Mail Order Tune's are great for the avg. Joe.. but in order to get your car tuned correctly the dyno is the only way to get er done!.. every car is different.. I think you can easily expect 15rwhp on top and quite a nice gain througout the band w/ a dead nut's tune..
