Post Weight Reduction

What all have you guys done to your cars to make them lighter? I have a '96 Z28 A4 and want to lighten it up a little bit. Thanks in advance!

I have thought of lightening mine up also, the easiest weight would be to remove the rear tire/jack, rear seat, carpeting, speakers and amp have a lot of weight but you might not want to remove all of this, you can swap out some heavy suspension parts with chrome moly which is lighter. if you really want, replace the front seats with racing seats, the wheels will make a difference, swap the stock heavy rims for some drag-lites and you will kick off a tenth in the quarter mile. If you really want to get serious you ca remove the air conditioning and stuff like that.

This year has been operation weight reduction for the Z.

So far...I have removed the following. ABS,Cruise, AC, Airbags, all interior panels (except door), All carpeting, Heat, Swapped radiators, Removed EGR system, bumper supports, draglites, Lift-off hood, rewired the car (no lie...we removed at least 40 lbs of wire), carbon fiber driveshaft (good to 1500hp, and weighs 5.3 lbs), all seats removed...drivers replaced with a sparco evo, and I'm sure theres more I'm forgetting....

But overall we are looking for a weight reduction of about 500lbs.

last winter i removed most of my wiring harness which i didn need because of the carburetor conversion. i also removed the heater core, evaporator core, and all air ducts, oh yeah and heater fan motor. i took out the stock guage cluster and fabricated a sheetmetal piece to replace it with autometer guages. i did use the clear plastic cover that goes over it though. i also pulled out most of my sound deadener. not too much weight there but hey every ouce counts. i weighed the car last week and came up with a really impressive number. 3085 without me. it is a 91 rs, 383 carbureted, 400turbo, stock rear, stock wheels. ive heard of guys taking the crash reinforcement bars out of the doors. hard job i heard, but worth about 65 pounds supposedly. anybody done this? good luck with whatever you do. have any ?????? just speak up.

Hey, it was either in the new Super Chevy or Hot Rod magazine that they showed how to fabricate some of your own body parts out of fiberglass instead of the stock steel parts, stuff like rocker panels etc. It was really cool, something you should try and find.

Loony.... I'll take a picture of the PILE of wire tonight... it's amazing.... Everything is now hard-wired to a switch panel... and all unnecessary GM Bulls$%^ was removed...

ie...fuse boxes..VATS..ABS...you get the idea.. It took about 2 weeks to complete the wiring delete.

The driveshaft is pretty sweet(the acpt weighs 9.6 if memory serves correct) so you can see why I would wanna go with a 5.3, If ya shoot me an e-mail to kevin_sharratt@colpal.com I will give you the necessary info. ( It's the same company most of the PRO-STOCK guys use)...and quite a bit cheaper than acpt (695 for mine)
