Tuning with an Edelbrock O2 sensor/gage

I took the old heap out (carbed engine) the other day after tuning on the road with an Edelbrock O2 sensor/gage. I had the gage set at 12.5 AFR with the mufflers at WOT.

At the track with the mufflers off the AFR went to over 15 at WOT.

I realize a regular O2 is not accurate at anything other than 14.7 AFR. I've had good results tuning the sig car with the stock O2s, so I don't mind the inaccuracy. Along with reading the plugs it at least provides some additional direction about what's going on in the combusiton chamber. The car did go faster with more jet.

Anyone with any tuning infomation using an O2 sensor/gage?

Shouldn't the carb recognize the additional airflow without the mufflers and compensate?
