T56 HP levels

How fast or how much HP can a T56 take. Street tires not slicks. In a 3600lbs car.

The answer is: more power than you have! Street tires will break loose before the transmission gives out.

How do you know how much power I have. Its for a swap Iam considering in my Monte Carlo. I just got my brake and clutch pedals for it. From OPG. Its a small block with 525 dynoed HP. Aluminum GM heads. Crane .545/.565 solid cam, TRW 11.0 flat tops, Victor Jr., 750 Holley, Sharp roller rockers, etc etc. Iam trying to make the Monte more of a driver. And with 4.86 gears I'd like to try the double overdrive.

He knows 'cause he has 733rwhp in a convertible with a T-56.
Also, RomanSS turned something considerably more than that and his street twin gave out before his transmission.

It was just a guess, which turned out to be correct .

My last dyno run was 733rwhp and since then I went from a 150 to a 200 shot, so it was approaching 800rwhp. The tranny has actually stood up to this power level with a 26" slick, but I figure it's on borrowed time. So I am upgrading for next year. But if you are using a street tire, I can't see any problem.

Of course, YMMV.

A T56 should hold up in your car with no problem at your power level.

Upgrade to what? An auto or another manual? My street tires are 31/18 Mickey Thompsons. My racing days are done for awhile. Our track is going go hell and I dont have time to travel all over. So Id like to drive the car some instead of sell it.

Again, you dont need to upgrade. Dont worry about your tranny unless you are making 700-750+rwhp, 800+rwtq if you are on the street.

Why create more hassle for yourself? Just use it for now. I would be concentrating on making sure you had a good clutch first (ie. street twin).

Horsepower is not what kills the t56 it is the shock of a hard launch with traction. I am making no where near the 700hp level and broke my output shaft on the 11th pass down the strip N/A. On street tires the t56 shouldn't have any problems holding up to 800hp but don't expect it to last long if you run E.T. Streets or slicks.

I planned on detuning the motor when I did the swap also. Smaller cam. Dual plane intake. And smaller carb. Probably a LT1 in the future. I was going to use a new T10 ,But a buddy has a T56 for sale cheap. It didnt cost too much to have the one in my Z rebuilt. So I'd like to try it for awhile.

I am getting the one piece Viper output shaft installed. If that breaks I will go to a TH400 with Gear Vendors OD. Unfortunately, there is no practical manual tranny upgrade. I talked to Tremec and they will make a custom T56 for an f-body with parts used in the Viper LeMans cars that is good for 800+ ft.lbs on race tires. All for just $25,000 .

The Lenco is not suitable for street use and the G-Force only marginally better.

You should be fine with street tires though.

Am I missing something here?? I have tore apart my tranny a couple of times and I have only found a one-piece output shaft!? Maybe you can fill me in a little more on that?? Thanks!!!
