Safety harness help. What kind?

I'm going to be getting a S&W roll cage and I'm wondering what 5 (or 6 I'm not sure) point safety harness I can buy for my car. My dad is taking care of all the safety stuff since he wants me to live. He'd prefer Simpson brand stuff but whatever ideas you have would be great. Thanks.

Whatever you feel comfortable with.

If your car is going to run quicker than 11.99 in the 1/4, the belts need to be replaced or re-webbed every 2 years from the date code on the belts. Not all belt manufacturers will reweb belts and those that do will only do their own.

Call around first to see if the company will reweb. If not then you'll need to buy new belts every 2 years. A $100 set of belts works just as good as a $250 set.

If the car is 12.00 and slower then there's no requirement to change the belts. Buy what you like best regardless of cost. After a few years the belts get worn and should be replaced anyway. It depends how much usage they get. A season for me is about 100 passes down the track. Places that you can race all year long might you could see 300-400 passes down the track. That's a lot of wear and tear on the belts every time you use them.

In a daily driver, 5 points harnesses are a pain. When worn properly, you can't lean forward to reach anything.

I was more wondering in terms of how they will install in my car. Do I need one that hooks to the rollbar or one that hooks to the floor? Stuff like that. Basically, I just want to know what the easiest way to hook up the 5-point harnesses since we're hoping for 11.8's or so. Thanks for your help...

Depends on the style. Some loop around the crossbar. Others need a mounting tab attached to the crossbar. The lap belts can attach to the factory seat belt mounting positions. Some sort of mount is required to be installed for the crotch belt.

Buy a rulebook!

You can't just install a harness in any position. There are specific places and positions each belt needs to be in. The rules are general so each setup isn't identical but there are guidelines as to what needs to be done.

It'll also be a little harder to install in your car(Z28) because you don't have adj. headrests. On my TA, they fit much better because my headrest isn't part of the seatback. Might have some problems w/ the bottom belt too because of the front lumbar on the seat...that is if you're keeping stock seats.

Stephen's right...get a book. You'll thank yourself if you ever need the belts to work.
