Removal of A/C black box (heater core) in engine bay ?
Removal of A/C black box (heater core) in engine bay ?
A while ago I removed my A/C compressor (gotta love the plug clearance
) and A/C condensor.
I'd like to get rid of the black box (heater core) that the a/c lines went to in the back pass side of the engine compartment.
Did 4th gen F-bodies ever come without A/C?
I'd like to keep the heat in the car for those cold spring / fall days but am looking to ditch the A/C part.
Has anyone done this and kept the heater / defroster working?
Posting in the general tech and drag race forums as this seems to be more of a drag race question.
Thanks,
Marc

Re: Removal of A/C black box (heater core) in engine bay ?
I have done exactly what you are wanting to do. You will have to take the box out of the car or cut it while still in the car...easier when it is out but it is a PITA to get out...whole dash has to come out. I cut mine about 1/2" out from the firewall and on an angle to allow air to flow through the box and into the heater core (the air flows from the fan into the black box in the engine bay and then into the heater core) It will be much easier with it out of the car but you kind of just eye it up and cut it. Then get some black plastic and some epoxy and glue some plastic flat pieces on the box. This will remove a lot of the box from under the hood while allowing you to keep the heat. I might have some pictures that I can e-mail you..just send me an e-mail to remind me.

Thanks,
I'm in the middle of replacing the head gaskets so I've got plenty of access if I have to leave it in the car.
I sent you an "E" mail about the pics.

I did the same thing except I had no motor in the car and won't retain the defrost or heater. My good friends "hammer" and "air-powered cut-off wheel" helped me out on that job.
I made a cover panel out of sheetmetal, fastened it w/ a half dozen self-tapping screws, sealed it w/ silicone and shot it black to match the car.

Yea, it worked fine.
Just remove the dash and yank it out, take a sawzall to it and then cover it with a piece of tin and some pop rivets and bam, good to go.
