Racing a Manual Trans

Hey guy i was wondering, i was curious, as to when u guys race ur M6s how do u guys do it. I have trouble launching my car, like i really have no idea on how to go about launching it good. Also what RPMs do u guys shift at?

Also what about highway races? Lets say im cruising in 5th or 6th gear, and some guy wants to race, what should i drop down too? im just really curious, its not like im going to go out and race, but just in case someone wants to go, i got to put them in there place..LOL

One more thing, how in the HELL do u brake torque in a manual, i tried it last night on like a deserted strip of road where no one goes, and couldnt figure out how to do it? Cause at one of the local shows they have a burn out contest, and i would REALLY like to join..THANKS ALOT guys

stick with street tires until you get a 12bolt cause that stock rear WILL break with sticky tires

my bolt on setup for me with my 12bolt and ET streets, i side stepped the clutch at 5000rpm's on the launch, then put my foot thru the floor and shifted at ~redline (~5800rpm LT1) according to the stock tach
of course i wouldnt try that with the 10bolt

for you, slip or feather the clutch out alot on the launch, until you are moving pretty good like during the 1st 10 or 15 feet of travel maybe, then let it grab completely and shift at whatever the LS1 redline is, or try different shift points over a few different races, see how your times turn out and go with whatever works best for your car!

to do a smoke show, just rev the car up in 2nd gear dump the clutch and very quickly stab at the brake pedal with your clutch foot while maintaining a steady rpm , few seconds later you should have a nice cloud of tire smoke in your mirrors
it might take once or twice to get the burnout down but its rather easy to do
to much brake and you can stall the car, too little brake and you'll just roll until traction catches up

launching a stick car that has a rearend to handle it, is violent and very satisfying

3rd gear in an 6 speed is like right in the middle in gearing of an auto's 2nd and 3rd gear.. (auto's 3rd gear = 4th gear of manual 1.00)

This is why 3rd in a manual feels awesome.

You can't brake torque a m6. You should shift at your redline. If you can afford some drag radials that will you allow more traction. I would practice your starts at stop signs or lights. Try to get the car to 40 without spinning the tires as quick as you can. Feather it or dump it at low rpms and figure out which way you can get out of the hole the quickest.

When your the highway or going 50-60 you can drop it into 2nd. When you going 70-75 drop it into third. And so on. That way it is like if you had been already rowing through the gears at WOT already, and you just jump into it somewhere.

Get on the track and you will be to see on paper what you can do now and then after maybe a few suspension mods and some practice will show you improvements.

You're probably thinking of how an auto car stalls up. In this case it's true. In the case the poster is asking, yes you can. Throw the thing in 2nd, rev it up, dump the clutch and get your foot on the brake. If you have a line lock and are fast enough at shifting, you could easily get it rolling in 2nd and slam 3rd to get even more smoke.

i need to get a m6!! If im going anything over 27mph it wont shift to first. But burnouts are nice just slam gas pedal and hold the brakes.

On drag radials I hit my line loc, smoke the tires in 2nd gear for about 20sec at a constant 3500-4000rpm, pull up to the line, rev to 2800, dump the clutch and slam the throttle. I am too scared to powershift at 6700rpm, so all my shifts are fast, but are lift throttle. Get consistent 1.8 60's with my totally stock except for 4.10s rear axle with 87k on it.
