Newbie needs help!
Newbie needs help!
Owned my Z for just over 2 months now, and haven't done any serious racing... until tonite. I've really been wanting to take my car up to the local drag strip, and when a '99 Mustang GT asked me to race tonite, I figured I could really use the practice if I do run the strip. He has a 4.6 GT with a Borla catback and K&N FIPK. I've got a K&N filter (stock box) and a Loudmouth on mine. He took me by 2-3 cars. Now I hate to make excuses, but I know I should beat that car. I dropped the clutch @ ~2300 rpm, spun the tires all the way through first gear, gave up on that, grabbed second, scratched, and finally caught. Needless to say, this didn't produce good results for me. For any M6 LT1 guys: What's a good rpm to launch at, and should I dump the clutch, or slip it a little? If I smoke through half of first gear, is it better to let off the gas and let the tires catch, or to just go for second? Or are my all-season radials just not up to the task no matter what I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, because I don't want to lose to another Ford!!!

Rule number one, you don't practice on the street to take it to the track. You take it to the track every time. It helps keep people alive and out of jail, got it?
Rule number two, street pavement and a track surface are very different things.
Rule number three, go to the track, lay down some runs, try not to spin, and come back with some useful data so we can actually do our best to offer advice.
Rule number four, you will get smoked by a Ford again, sooner or later, no matter what you do.

What Ted said. Pay the chump change at the track - it's pennies when compared to someone's life.
You WILL get beat by Fords, Honda's, Neon's, etc..... there's always someone out there faster. For the most part.

Keep it on the track.. If you stick with it you will have a BLAST!!!!! And sooner or later you always lose.... Have fun and enjoy yourself, ask questions at the track.. All the drivers have info you could use tires, gas, susp. etc... Yes, even the FORD guys..
