Well Boys and Girls I kicked the old guy Off the Crown today
Tossed and turned all night getting ready for today. I knew it was going to be cold and the track was going to suck. I was worried about the launch and the shift. Last year one of our team mates almost bit it going into third. I was worried about new un-tested shift points as well as first time out on this tie combo. A quick check showed I was weighing in at 3690lbs.
So I Sleep in and let everyone else freeze. I hit the track at about 9:30. Go do all the little stuff like get signed in and numbers and the basic Tower stuff. Get done just as the ricers show up and head back to change tires. Get the tires installed, Bar padding and roll into the lanes.
So now it is 10am or so. I roll into the lanes and get tested in. They do a good job and everything is legal. So now I sit. Finally at around 1pm or so they send the first guy down. A team member at that
The White GS. he skates all over and they shut it down and put the street car back out. They have them driving circles on the track trying to warm it up, but hey lets face it only power cars and weather are going to do that.
At around 2:15 they start pulling our lanes. As I am pulling up one of the track guys comes over to tell me that it gets real slick just off the concrete. NICE I think. I am scared to death as it is. it has been six months and a whole lot of HP ago the last time I went down this track!
They roll me into the box and I light them up.. and keep them rolling I want HEAT!!! I heated them for over fifteen seconds and felt that should do. I bring it to the line and stage. As I bring it up on the converter I start to push in the lights so I ease off. On the green I hammer it and I feel the tires shake! Just as it settles down I leave the concrete and the 1-2 shift happens, the car is banging off the rev limiter and spinning. I Just hold on because she is going straight and that is good enough for me! I hit third at or before half track and the car starts to sway from side to side but well under control. I go through the lights and Lift lightly so I do not wind up looking like that Supra last year and roll around and pick up my slip.
The run Was better then I thought, but no Cookies for Ellis with only a 12.027@112.89 with a dismal 1.722 60ft. I am well short of my goal. MPH is way down and 60ft sucks. I go back to the pits and drop the 1-2 shift point to try and clear the 1-2 shift in time to keep it hooked. When I got in I checked the tires and they were still cold as rocks!
I roll back into the lanes and wait. At 3:30 I roll into the box again. I heat the tires till I finally see them rolling smoke and roll out spinning to clean the water off. As I stage I make a concerted effort to get the stall up with out sliding the tires. For this my R/T sucked but I did not care we were running singles. The green had been on for over a second when I launched it and she hooked ok but I could feel the tires squirming. on the 1-2 shift I once again hit the limiter and un-settle the car. She is going straight so I just hold on!
I tripped the lights at 11.878@113.77 with a mere 1.672 60ft. YEAH BABY!! When I get back to the pits the tires are still warm. GOOOOD. I jump out and check the MSD limiter and see I have the 6,800 chip in
I yank it and stuff the 7,000 chip in, then roll back into the lanes while the tires are still warm!
They pull me into the box and tell me the track is fading fast "Be safe". I light them up and hold for about 20 seconds and roll out hard. For the first time I felt the tires stick coming out of the box. At the light I am playing with the stall again and blow the light at a .360 and still feel the tires squirm. I watch the tach going up...up....up and finally catching the 1-2 shift just before 7,000RPM. It hits hard and the car squirms from side to side as it fights for traction and then keeps pulling for the 2-3 shift. Again it hits hard and the car starts to sway from side to side but Keeps going fairly straight. I Blast through the traps with a 11.857@114.35 with a crappy 1.694 60ft.
In the end I am still 2MPH short of the goal But I feel with a good track and better weather it will come around.
Now for the gold! Once I got home and checked I realized ALL three of my passes today were good enough to take top titles in the N/A H/C area of the NW for an LT1
For that alone, today was GREAT!!!
later all!
