Exclamation need help on setting up hals?????

well here is the what i had, and what i now have

2002 race weight 3640ish, stock 1LE shocks and springs, m6 dropping clutch at 5000 rpm (minimum) on spray.

2003 race weight 3450ish, front/rear hal shocks, front hal springs, and a cut stock spring on the rear, same launches, and same spray.....well ok maybe a little bit more

most of the weight came off of the front of the car, new bmr k frame, upper and lower control arms, removed front bumper support, drained washer fluid, removed abs, smaller battery.

....keep this in mind.....

would a setting of 6 all the way around be similar to the stock shocks??? i am thinking that is right where i want to start, and then one click at a time go down on the hals.

feel free to make suggestions and any related experiences are appreciated. i know there is still over 2 mmonths till race season, but i justr wnat to have all bases covered

I usually set my shocks on 4 up front. YOu wantthe front end to come up and stay up. Ive seen too many people bouncing down the track. Not good on a car with your power as it will unload the rear tires some on the bounces. I have found that on my car the harder I set the rear shocks the better the car 60's. I have a different suspension setup than you have(pete z bars) but when I would watch vids of my car launching the tires would jam into the ground..bounce back..then spin. every car is different and your just gonna have to play with yours. I would start the front on at least 3 and see how the car reacts. Also I found that my car leaves flatter if I stagger the rear shocks. My last time out on my 1.49 driveshaft breaking launch I was at 7/8 on the rear and 4 on the fronts.

AlexA,

thanks for the links, problem is i can't read the article, as it is too small, even when i go full screen, grrrrr.

95 Bird,

thanks for the explanation, i think i may start at 8 on the rears and 6 on the fronts. i want to get it as close to a stock feel as possible, and then go from there. on motor i will start a bit looser and i will tighten it up when i spray the car!

what setting would you consider to be a stock one? (in your opinion)

thanks again for your help!

One the street I ran 8-9 on the front and 6 - 7 on the rear. It really is according to your car weight. I liked the above settings because it seemed tighter than stock and had less body role. Prolly 6/6 would be about stock

I called QA1 and they said 5 or 6 is the close to OEM. I also agree with everything 95Bird said. Loose in the front, stiff in the back with a trick.

Set the right rear stiffer than the left rear ... similiar effect as a set of trick rear drag springs, where the right spring is stiffer than the left or stiffening the right rear with an airbag.

Good Luck

No bag. thats why I stager the shocks. I find it easier than having to put air in a bag..just crawl under the car and "click" your done. I have vid of leaving with rears set the same..then rears set with one click in the pass. side .

In this run you can see the car leaves "crossed up". Lifts the left front tire and squats to the right alittle(watch close)

This run I added a click in the right rear shock..thats all that changed..besides being the next day. Pulled both tires the same..well..it hopped them ...lol..but they come up the same.

v6toZ28,

thanks for the clarification, i have seen a friend of mine with a 96SS very similar motor to mine, running high tens, with a 4500-4800 stall (i forget exactly) anyways when he launches the frontleft picks right up (normal) and the right rear squats right down! he did the same thing because he has no air bags. i don't know if he staggered it but he did turn them up to compensate for the airbags. with the experience i have my first notion would be to throw in an airbag at least in the right rear. i have them in both rear coils on mine.

95bird, thanks for the clips, i could only open up the first one. i was fairly impressed with how your car left, but it sounded like you spun a bit, how was your 60' on that run? it squatted but i know mine doesn't leave as pretty as yours did, in respect to the squat portion.

i think when i run at the track this year i am going to set it up at 5 up front and 7/8 in the rear l/r respectively for the first time for spray.

for motor i am gonna set it at 3 up front and probably4/5 out back.

thanks
taner
