Thumbs down Mishap at the track last night...

First - I'm fine. The car - not so much. First round, after going through the traps (and smiling because my win light came on) my car started heading for the wall - I was in the right lane. I think I overcorrected to the left and sent the car over onto it's roof. I'm told it looked a lot worse outside the car than it felt from the inside. The car got some air so from the starting line, they could see the entire bottom of the car. It brushed the passenger side roof and then rolled to the driver's side roof. Next it scraped the driver's side quarter and landed back on the shiny side up. I *think* I hit the brakes too hard...

Front and rear windows busted but amazingly, the glass front end only has one small scrape on it! The rear quater is crushed in at the tail light so at this point we're thinking our best bet would be to cut the body off and put and new one on - the chassis is fine!! The front control arm broke when it landed and the hub broke off.

With that said, I think now is a great time for me to hop up onto my soapbox about safety. There are rules for a reason. I check my belts THREE times before every pass I make in my car to insure they are as tight as they possibly can be. I don't want to be able to move in my seat. I wear a full face helmet at all times but never put the shield down. Last night was no exception... I had some glass and metal flake stuck to my lips and in my eyes but it could have been worse!! Gloves, neck collar, jacket and pants... All of my equipment did what it was supposed to do! My cage kept the car from collapsing on me when it landed on the roof. Safety, safety, safety folks!!! I feel GREAT today. The tight belts kept me from moving around while rolling.

THANK YOU JIM FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!!

Here are some pictures:

Woah Jackie! We're glad EVERYTHING kept you safe!. Shield down! Why would you not utilize something called a FACE SHIELD? Its like having a trans shield but putting it in the trunk just because....

I hope the rebuild goes smoothly.

Makes me a bit claustrophobic... BUT, it will be down from now on!!! I guess you just never expect to need a face shield down in a door car!!

Thanks guys. I'm glad I'm fine too! I sure gave my new husband a scare though. He built me one helluva car and kept me safe - that's all we could ask for!

SO... if any of you come across a 62-65 nova body - PM me.

First, I'm glad to hear you're OK and all the safety equipment worked. I removed the shield from my full-face helmet, maybe I should rethink that.

Looking at your car number (N182), you must be from NHRA Division 1, what track were you at?

Hope the rebuild goes well.

I don't pull the face shield all the way down. I leave a finger space for ventilaton. FYI Rick looked more shook up that you. Did the win light look funny upsidedown?

I run points at Atco in Pro. The ambulance was there within SECONDS and the safety crew less than a minute. I have never said a negative thing about that track and I never will. Joe Sway Sr (track owner) even came up to me later and pulled me aside to make sure I was ok and to give me some fatherly advice. I can't say enough wonderful things about that track. I guess it's different for me though - been going there since I was an infant so everyone knows my family well.

Haha... I didn't see it upsidedown. I saw it before I went over though and was thrilled to have won the round!! Live and learn, right?!

Thanks again guys. It was honestly not scary from inside the car. I guess I fell into a "what can I do to make the damage as minimal as possible and how do I make sure I don't hit the car in the other lane" mode! That is pretty much what was going through my head...

We've already found a 63 body for it and we've ordered some new sheet metal too. I'm thrilled that it is all body damage other than that front wheel. It's just going to require a TON of labor!!
