L-99

What do you all think about the L-99 (265ci LT-1) for drag racing?

Just interested.

I try not to think about it for drag-racing.

Why do you ask? You have a Buick Roadmaster that you're looking to take down the track?

Well, I guess that I ran the first ever L-99 race motor this weekend! I didn't get it running until Friday afternoon (and then the CSI water pump failed) so I only had time to adjust the timing and set-up a quick fuel map. I then towed to Rockingham and ran the last round of Stock Eliminator qualifying.
The car is a 1999 Camaro and fits in SGT/G (13.15 index) with the L-99. It ran a 12.57 at 107mph on that run, spinning the tires all thru first and I missed the third gear shift (TH-350). Even that run means that I am making over 1 HP per cubic inch!
The motor has a .413/.430 lift cam. It is .030 over, balanced and blueprinted. Hooker headers are used along with Accel DFI. The car weighs 3275 (300 lbs above the class minimum!).
Just wait till I get this thing on a dyno, so that I can tune it!

Don't count this awsome little motor out!

Sweet!

Although, I actually was kinda hoping you were gonna run a Roadmaster wagon or something.

I will be putting the LT-1 from GUMP into the Camaro within the next week or so. It seems that the Camaro will be getting a new home!
The L-99 will be going into GUMP (my Firebird) and getting some serious testing. The Firebird will be easier to get weight off than the Camaro. The Camaro is perfect for D/SA with the LT-1.
I will be picking up another L-99 today. This one will be built as a "Record " motor for the first of the year (A record motor can also be defined as a bomb!).
The best part of the L-99 is that I shifted it at 7000 and ran it up to 8000+ in third gear!! (this was in the shut down area the car really needs more gear) (Who said that powderred metal rods can not handle high RPM's??).
As you can tell, I am quite excited about this combination. Anybody want to guess how fast it will run next year, or maybe how much HP I will get out of it? (I may even give some kind of prize to the closest guess).

Mark, see you at Shadyside soon.

Best Regards,

Daren

Tom,

The only legal motor in the wagons is the iron head LT-1(also a very good motor). I tried real hard to get GM to submit the L-99 as the base motor for the wagons to the NHRA, but they would not bite.
If I could find anyone who was interested in purchasing a wagon when it was finished I would probably build one (As an LT-1 powerred Stocker). The problem that I have is that Veronica hates wagons. She would take it much easier if we got stuck with another F-Body versus a wagon.

Wink

...but they obviously must have submitted it as legal in a F-car...
