how too... 4L60E

Which is the best/proper method for drag racing an 4L60E? Where the the gear selector be for the best performance? Is manually shifting your gear selector bad? If I'm right on my car I have overdrive, drive, 2 , and 1. I'm very interested in everyones opinoin after reading a forum on ls1tech...How do you guys race your 4l60e autos? - LS1TECH

You stick in in D (not overdrive) and leave it be. Shifting it yourself will only work if you have already passed the actually shift point set in the computer and have not yet hit your rev limiter. Other than that, if you start in 1st for example, and try to shift to 2nd, the car won't actually shift when you do. The computer still has to see the correct MPH and RPM to actuate the shift.

In short, get it programmed to shift in the optimal spot for you powerband and don't touch it.

Well competent professional tranny builders have reported more pressure for the 2-3 shift if the selector is in OD.

If you are running out of gear and need to hold 3rd I would pull the selector back to third after the 2-3 shift.

This I did not know. What causes that? I'll have to give that a try as soon as I get back to the track.

Reading the link the OP posted.

When you leave it in "D" the overruns will apply on the 2-3 shift. So you have another clutch coming on along with the 3-4's. This will take apply oil away from the 3-4 clutch pack, and send it to the overruns. Which is not the best thing. If you leave it in "OD" the overrun clutches don't apply, so no apply oil is going elsewhere, giving you the best WOT 2-3 shift.
I leave mine in OD, I have tried it in D and noticed no difference in times/mph. I also have a fairly stock car.

I've been having trouble with 2-3 shift on the gas using (D) after reading this I tried (OD) and shifted great. Use (OD)!!!!!

If 2-3 "gives you trouble" in selected "3" I would think either the shift point and rev limit are set too close together or the 3-4 clutches are on their way down.

Yes selecting OD makes for more pressure but at the same time the 2-3 should happen without issue in selected 3rd.
