Cool How did newbie do?

Okay. Tonight was the first time ever racing at a track. Glad that I finally got it over with before I turn 40...

Car is a 00 Z28, A4 w/2.73's. Stock dyno numbers in sig. The only mods are SLP lid and a cutout. Half a tank of gas, nothing removed from the inside. Tires are GY F1 GS-D3's w/about 80% tread and ~35 pounds of air.

I would guesstimate the temperature being at least 90 degrees and 70-80% humidity. Yeah..., not the best conditions for racing, eh...?

I did 4 runs in a 10-15 minute span with about 20-25 minutes of cooling between runs. Launched between 1200 and 1500 at the last yellow.

First 4 runs were between 9.21 @ 80.19 and 9.23 @79.84. 60ft varied between 2.30 and 2.35. Didn't heat the tires at all, just drove straight to staging.

For the next 4 runs I heated up the tires a little bit. Times varied between 9.15 @ 79.55 and 9.19 @79.11. 60 footers were between 2.21 and 2.22.

For the last 4 I also heated the tires some before every run and times were from 9.17 @ 79.74 to 9.22 @ 78.95 with 60 foot from 2.23 to 2.24.

So, how did I do? Suggestions? I thought I'd dip into the high 8's, but I guess not. Maybe next time...

Sorry for such a long post... I guess I'm just excited about the whole stuff. Thanks for reading through.

I have no idea how good or bad those times are, I'm so used to 1/4 times.

Looks to be about a 14.1 on your best runs. get that 60' in the 2.0 area and you will hit 13's

The weather and altitude play a big part in times. Sounds like you know when and how to launch, just not gripping the best. You MPH is right where mine is and I'm at 8.5sec. New DR tires and you'll be much faster 60ft's. If you decide you like to go fast then next I would get a 2800 stall and 3:73 gears. Those will put you mid 8's. From there it's all about $$$$. I'm sure there are a ton of other opinions, that's just mine.

Good luck and have fun!

Thumbs up

Thanks guys!

I should be able the shave some off of the 60ft time by getting some more practicing under my belt. SHouldn't be too hard.

Weather is probably quite big factor over here right now: hot, humid and all that...

I'm pretty confident that with a little more practice and cooler weather, I should be in the 8's.

Once I get that taken care of, then I'll move on the the 1/4 mile track. Too bad it is about an hour away from here , so can't visit it too often. The 1/8 mile track is about 10 minutes away, so I'll just stay there for now and practice some more.

Since the Z is my daily drive, I'm not sure if I want to start messing with the gears and stall etc. I like the way it drives now every day and the gas mileage is very good (22-24mpg). I don't want to make it a race car, but some minor stuff would be nice, though. Oh well...

I'd say let some air out of the tires (go to 20) and chirp them a little bit. Launch rpms sounds about right (1500 or so). Considering you are running on street tires, that sounds about right. Drag radials will help a lot, you just have to do a real burnout and get them hot for them to make a big difference and that takes practice. This is why you need to reenforce the rearend.

Sounds like you did just about right - especially for your first time out. Congratulations for finally getting to the track. I bet you are an addict now!

Yeah, pretty much so.

I guess I'll let some air out from the tires next time and see how much that helps. The current weather is not going to help at all, though...

I guess I'll be shooting for very low 9's, or maybe even high 8's next time around. Hopefully...

My very first time at the track was on November 1, 2003 at Ennis (1/4 mile) and my best 1/8 mile time was: 9.044 @ 81.98. This was my first time ever. Car was dead stock. Stock tires with 30 psi. Now remember, it was cooler and very little humidity and it was during the day on a Sunday. So see, you are doing great - especially considering this Texas heat and humidity.

My first time at track was about 4 months ago. I think the weather was alright, but it was humid cause it ended up raining as I was pulling out to leave. Goodyear eagle gsc's

Times
2.3 60"
8.75 @ 86.5 mph

That was with everything in sig except headers/exhuast.

Re: How did newbie do?

Those times seem kind of slow...I took my stock '99 'vert to the track and I ran a 9.008 at 80 mph on my first run and a 9.057 at 80 mph on my second run. I think my best 60' was a 2.122.

I think in cooler weather and more practice you'll be getting high 8s.

Re: How did newbie do?

All it takes is a little practice man, get some of that air out of your tires and get a set of 3.73s in and you'll be well on you'r way to much better times.
