Front bumper support removal...

Are they any guides, pictures, or websites showing what all to do for this? Has anyone done it that can give me a hand?

Well, I've taken my front bumper off to mess around with removing foglights and the windshield washer reservoir... do you need a guide for that or just about taking off the support itself?

Its really very intuitive. Remove the air dam and the cover panels from underneath. Then, just start working your way around the nose cone, pulling the various pop-pins and screws. The tricky ones are in the corner, where the rubber cover curves around the front edge of the fender, and you have to pop the headlights up to get to the nuts that hold the cover to the fender. The bulb sockets can be removed from the parking lights and the side marker positions.

Once you get the cover off, its simply a matter of pulling 4 bolts on the end of each subframe to remove the steel cross-support, and the foam cover as a single unit. Weight = 19#.

When you put the bumper cover back on, I felt it necessary to add a thin aluminum backing angle to the seam where the lower front of the bumper cover was pinned through the radiator baffle to the metal cross-support (which is no longer there). Then I bolted the cover and the baffle together, through the aluminum angle, and used nylon ties to hold the aluminum bar to the bolt holes on the end frames. That seemed to firm everything up a lot better.

Let me know when you want some non-pictorial help on the rear bumper support.

Funny.... 40 years ago when I started driving, there were no "crash pads" in bumpers , but thanks for your concern.

And, no, it isn't a daily driver .

Thanks for the instructions Fred, and I have to agree with Fred. If I drive around in an escort with no airbag or bumper crush pads all day whats the difference if Im in my F body?

BMR shows the removal of the bumper support on their Turbo F-body build up. Has a good picture of the factory support and the support they fabricated to replace it. According to their website, the bumper support for a Z28 was 27.25 lbs. After installation of their replacment support the weight savings was 18.75 lbs.

Here is the link to the page with the pictures and information I mentioned above: BMR Bumper Support

I don't see it on their webpage as a product, but they might be willing to offer it is the interest was there.

I know if the price was right I would consider it, 19lbs off the front of my car would be very appealling, especially since I need to start offsetting the weight my Wolfe Cage is going to add to my Formula.

Has anyone had problems with the paint or the nose bowing in at high speeds with the bumper supports off?

FYI, BMR will not be making a production run on those bumper supports, becuase of liability issues.

I think the caution on daily drivers is more for accident situations. If it's a minor fender bender, probally no problem. But the liability is there if it is a major accident, or you or someone else dies or is seriously injured.

"No matter how much money you spend to go so fast, there will always be a guy that could have gone much faster for a lot less. He didn't, but he could have."-quote from Hot Rod mag

That is the funniest quote I've heard in a long time!!! And so true!
