In my world the definition of a manual transmission is you have a clutch and a clutch pedal. The operator operates the clutch every time he or she shifts gears. Therein lies the problem with a true manual transmission in a drag racing situation.
No misconception here, an automatic will always shift faster than a manual transmission.
Yes, a manual valve body in a auto. Is still an auto, with a manual valve body.
The term "clutchless" when used to refer to a manual trans, is clutchless shifting. There is a clutch and a clutch pedal used to launch the car.
I'm sorry your world is so narrow. In the real world of drag racing manual trans cars, we only use the clutch to launch the car, shifting is clutchless. WARNING do NOT try this with a T5, T56 or other types of street car transmissions without the proper mods, faceplating, hardend gears---.

This debate has gone on for years and will continue for years.
I sure don't know all there is to know about autos, and so far only know enough about clutch cars to get me in trouble, but God it's been fun.

I just felt a few things needed to be cleared up.
A properly tuned drag clutch, will allow the engine to stay in it's power curve.
A properly prepared stick trans, does not need a clutch to shift.
Now on that all important shift time, I guess you got me. My shift lever is probably longer and has a longer throw and I shift more times.
But wait, I could get an air shifter! Got ya

Bottom line, both will work in a drag car.
The auto is cheaper and easier to use.
I just like my stick, you cann't change that, and really I'm not trying to change your mind either.

P.S. If you haven't allready seen this, ck it out. I LMAO.

Well at least I got ya to type more than a one word response.

Clutchless shifting, air shifters..........your getting closer and closer to an automatic with every explanation.

I like sticks too. I plan on buying a six speed car in the near future. But my race car will always have an automatic.

I think the debate was actually pretty much settled back in the 1970s when Pro Stock wrnt to automatics and every vehicle except one produced quicker elapsed times. The only vehicle which didn't was the one driven by Ronnie Sox. His vehicle slowed down with the automatic.

Basically, unless you can shift like Ronnie Sox an automatic will produce a better ET.
