A couple insane cars at the track yesterday, and a new best N/A for me
This was all at National Trail Raceway yesterday, pretty cold and dry out.
Lee Howie's turbo C4 Vette. I've watched it run many times before, but ya always have to note a car run 7.4's @ 185! He sits and spools that turbo for about 8 seconds before he launches.
Did I mention he runs it in the outlaw street class each year for our King of Columbus shootout??
94-96 Impala SS. I didn't get a good look at it, but did see it run, plus we have it on tape (and saw the motor on tape too, my buddy was all about taping stuff today). I believe it was a twin-turbo, and an LT1 for sure. Yeah, 10.1 @ 134.....my god, you would NEVER expect that pig to run that!!
95 Z28. Our friend Judd. Stock looking on the outside except for an SS hood and rims. 26x10.5x16 ET Streets, 2-bolt main Ligenfelter 383 w/ a cam just slightly bigger than a Hot Cam, 6-speed, Moser 12-bolt w/ 3.73's, cage and all that needed stuff, dual stage NX kit running 100/100 each stage (200 shot total through the intake). The car has ran a best of 11.7 @ 118 I think N/A.
His best run today: 10.85 @ 129, w/ a 1.66 60'! Not bad for a very streetable street car, and not much in terms of weight reduction. Ohh, did I mention he hasn't hooked up his bottle heater yet, and only had 700 psi bottle pressure!! We have one more track day next Sunday, and he will have the heater on by then.
Ahhh, my new times. I'm not overly pleased, but the car is so freaking heavy. I haven't got to weigh it yet, but the only weight reduction I've done is my fiberglass hood and yanked the rear seats; yanked the jack and spare but replaced those with a heavier bottle.
Also, 2 amps, sub, cage, SLP Subframes (heaviest you can buy), Spohn T/A is much heavier, heavier 12-bolt, my front rims w/ tires weigh 51lbs each. Yeah, this car is a freaking pig, and is going on a diet next month.
All day I was running consistant 12.5x @ 111.x on ET Streets. My best run was my last run:
60' : 1.864
1/8: 8.045 @ 87.46
1/4: 12.452 @ 111.83
Best MPH's for the day were 88.23/111.92 on a 1.888 60', so my last run was not my strongest. My problem the whole day was the car would bog off the line badly. It may spin for about 3-5 feet, then just bog. I was VERY aggressive w/ my launch, but the car just likes to hook N/A. Also, it is NOT setup for the best N/A runs. I'm only at the top of 3rd N/A.....going through the traps at around 6900-7000. Car seems to like being shifted at around 6800-6900. Also, I get a bunch of knock (false or real, dunno) at launch, and it just keeps the timing pulled throughout the run, so most of my runs were w/ 4-6 degrees of timing pulled throughout them. I need to mess w/ my tuning more. It also is running rich above 4000 RPM.
Also made a single N2O pass w/ a 75 shot. MSD hasn't sent my Digital 6 back, so I won't brave a 150 shot until they do. On this entire run, the damn thing was popping for some reason. I don't know what the deal was; car ran perfect N/A, and I know my nitrous system is in pretty good shape. I'll have to work that out this week. The run:
60' : 1.865 (spinning)
1/8 : 7.731 @ 92.80
1/4 : 11.978 @ 115.99
Here is where it gets weird. My BEST 1/8 mile last year internally stock (without the cage, sub, or sub amp), was 7.468 @ 92.78, 1.74 60', on a 150 shot. That run was also my best run, but the nitrous cut off at 4th gear, so my 1/4 MPH was down (from my comparisons, that trap woulda probably have been around 118.5-119). But on another run, w/ an even LOWER 1/8 MPH (91.84), the car trapped 117.5. Something is definately up w/ my nitrous on yesterday's pass, it should have been AT LEAST a 118 MPH run on a 75 shot; something must have happened after the 1/8th. Regardless, the car is stronger this year on a 75 shot w/ more weight than it was last year on a 150 shot.
Can't complain about that I guess.
That's alright; next year, with some dyno tuning and 150lb weight reduction (skinnies, K-member, and !AC), I should be able to sneak into the high 10's on a stock bottom end w/ a 150-175 shot. I'm also doing 3" true duals this winter, and a 58mm TB next year (vs my stock TB), so she should have some more power too.

My buddy may have gotten a few pics of it; I know he got it on video....if he ever converts his video to digital format, I'll post it.
It is an 80's C4, tubbed, I believe a twin turbo, and that's about all I know of it. Car is nuts for sure!! Lee Howie (the owner/driver), owns a shop that does a lot of forced induction work. He actually sold his old car, an 88 LX running a Nascar block and insanley big single turbo that ran in the mid 8's to buy this C4. The C4 was mostly built when he got it, then he just finished it off and it runs very well.
I dunno if I'll be able to hit 11's N/A, even with some tuning. Launching is really hard to get right on this car; sometimes it will spin for a brieft moment, then bog down. I'm going to try a few things before the next Sunday, and see if I can trim my times down to the 12.3 range N/A, and my MPH up to the 112 range; both are doable.

Sounds like he bought Randy Eakins old vette
His old mustang was a little ole 306 ford with a 91mm turbo on it
went 8.20s@172 or so on 12.5" DOT Hoosiers
The vette you are describing sounds like Randy Eakins old turbo vette. It was a tubbed C4 vette with a 400" 18* headed small block with a 100mm on it. Went high 7s consistently and never really had issues with it
cool though, i'd love to see a vid

I think Howie is pretty much an any-car guy.
One of the guys on our local racing board had Howie build (or at least partly build) his 851 RWHP Supra (car looks almost stock). Howie has even taken the car down the strip quite a few times. Howie also built up the dude's Typhoon a bit too (I know the guy, which is why I know all of this).
Howie can be seen about every week driving that C4 down the track. Takes forever to spool, but when it does, my god!
