Can a 17inch rim hook up?

Can a 17'' rim hook up? If so, what kinda tires should i put on it to get the best out of them? Im thinking about bfg drag radials or some nitto's. I would appreciate some good advice on this. THANKS

A friend of mine is cutting 1.6 and 1.7 sixty foot times on 17" rims with BFG drag radials on his 2002 Z06 Corvette.

That said, smaller rims are much better for drag racing. I use 15" rims and 28" tall tires. Larger rims mean a shorter sidewall and therefore less flex at the launch which makes it more difficult to hook up. Everybodies car is different.

Thanks for the info! I was just curious how do Vipers and cars like the ZL1 Camaro which runs 0-60mph in 2.7 sec. hook up on 18inch rims. Wouldnt that mean even less sidewall's than on a 17 inch rim. I drag my car some but i do more street racing. I just recently bought some 2001 17 inch vette rims for my car and i would hate to have to buy another set. If worst comes to worst, i'll get some weld's for my car, but i know i can get these 17's to hook. Well, i sure hope so!

Don't forget that Vipers have 335 wide tires on the back & have better weight distribution (more weight on the rear tires).

I don't recall the details about the ZL1 Camaro, but I do recall it had *wide* tires on the back.

There are also suspension mods you can do to make those tires to hook up (as well as any other tire).

Good point Rob! I almost forgot that the tires are that wide. 335's are huge. Im probably gonna go with 275 45 17's. They should hook up ok. At least im hoping so. Do you know what kinda suspension mods i can do to help me out?

I had my best 60' w 15 lbs in some 275/40's BFG's. I did a 2nd gear burnout until I had a pretty good amount of smoke. I launched 4500. I think it was a 1.74. Not quite as good on the spray though

Hey, 1fastredz, where in Gville are you located? I live just inside Simpsonville. Are you running 17 inch wheels on your car too? Is your car the red z, with the ss hood on it and the chrome 5 stars? If so, i know who you are. What was your time when you ran that 1.7 60 and launched at 4500rpm?

Suspension mods that help hooking up: (in no particular order)

1) tires
2) better LCA's
3) adjustable relocation brackets
4) better Torque arm

For faster cars:

1) Big rear-sway bar helps the car leave level
2) air-bag

17's do hookup with dragradilas but your 7.4 guesstimated et is far off I can tell you that much. I run 7.4's with the mods in my sig with a 150shot which is good for 11.40-11.50's . But go try it out and let us know what it does.

Thanks TA! 7.6's is what im hoping for. I run 8.3's on street tires and not spraying til 2nd gear. I hope with drag radials it will drop to 7.6's. Im about to get a pcmforless program and some more mods here at christmas time.

Those magazine ars ARE run with full on drag slicks usually...THe only way that ZL1 posted goot times is with 28" tall 11.5" or so wide slicks. I have the 9.55 second video of his run at Milan..

Same as the TUrbo vipers and Vettes...They should post what they run on street tires. hehe

old post but thought i'd add too it....

i've seen a few 18's run very low 1.0 60's the best i've seen in person was a vette on 18's run 1.4 60 with some slipping using a bfg 295/25/18. i'm also running the same tire on my 18's and i've hit mid 1's consistently with 1.6 being my average on an 18" rim.

You dug up an ancient post here! lol

I now have 15'' drag rims and dont really worry about traction anymore.

15's are good and for racing the lighter the better. i like to cruise though and occasionally go to the track without having to switch wheels so the 18's need to work and with the new dr's they do. better then most smaller wheels sometimes. just slow the car down for obvious reasons.
