burnouts
this is probably a repost but can anyone tell me seriously whether i should let my car shift in the burnout box or keep it in 1st and sit at like 5K rpms....
here's my dilemma....
-no matter how long i sit there, 1st gear doesn't seem to spin fast enough to get the tires hot. I've yet to run a sub 1.9X 60 foot with a 1st gear only burnout.
-i can rip off a 1.7X when i let the car shift (usually finishing the burnout in 3rd) but last time i was at the track my friends car blew up the tranny AND the rear when one of the tires (ET street) caught traction mid-shift and destroyed everything.
if i keep burning out in drive, am i gonna blow something up, i've already lost one rear to unknown causes.
BTW:im on a drag radial but directions for a slick would be nice too if theyre any different.
thanx

Wheel speed.
You need wheel speed to do a proper burnout. Because of the intermediate sprag in most GM trannies, you don't want to come out of the water box in second gear and first gear is too slow.
The best thing to do is get the tires spinning in first, quickly shift to second. Before coming out of the water box, shift into third then roll out not lifting suddenly off the throttle.
It's that sudden lift or if the tires quickly hit dry pavement and stop spinning that causes damage in the tranny. Usually blowing up the intermediate sprag.
