Anyone change gears and gain MPH?

I posted this in the tech section, but figure I might get a better answer here. I'm looking for M6 cars that swapped gears - 3.73, 4.10s, 4.56..whatever.

Did you gain any mph going with a numerically higher gear?

Ryan I didnt go to the track yet but I swapped from 3.42's to 4.10's. I dont have any times with the 3.42's but the car feels WAY faster with the 4.10's. The damn thing rev's so fast I can barely shift in time. Seriously though I once read a 3.42 -4.10 jump was worth .2 and 2 mph to most guys.

I guess it reall just depends if your car needs it or not.

Thanks for the info pdm. I'm wandering how much I could gain with some 3.73s/4.10s.

Right now the car feels kinda sluggish. My first time out with the cam was only 1mph faster than before . Since then I think I've picked up some mph with tuning.

Just curious if an NA car with an ok-revving cam (~6500) could gain any mph with a gear swap.

Ryan if you are talking pure 1/4 performance here get the gear thatll get you through the traps right at or nearest peak power. With 4.10's and 26" tire Ill go through the traps right at or near peak power. Ill be shifting at 6600 and that may change once I get a couple passes under my belt. If I shift at 6600 thatll bring me right back to peak torque in the next gear.

With my 3.42's I would be going through the traps in 4th at something like 4800 rpms WAY below peak power.

Right now I go through the traps in third gear @ ~6500. Its kind of fun .

I'd say I'm close to peak HP right where I am, but in third gear. Would shifting gears help? I'd need quite a bit of gear (too much fro the street I'd bet) to get to the same rpm in fourth gear.

What gears do you have now 3.42's? How tall is the tire do you run? AFAIK going through traps in 4th is desirable although I dont think going through 3rd is hurting you.

Ryan Im sure youve seen this but play around and see what gear might work best. I figured my gear ratio on my targeted trap speed. http://www.f-body.org/gears/
