13.8s? why

I have a 1997 Camaro SS with the following done:

shorty headers
ported MAF
pullys
hypertech programming
K&N (big deal)
Moser rearend with 4:10
hoosier slicks
and lots of suspension work

Why is my car so slow? I have been told that with all of the mods on the car it should go a lot faster. 60' is OK but not the best (1.8) with the slicks.
Any suggestions would be great.

Well, is it an M6 or an A4? What mph are you running?

What is the elevation of the track you are running at?<--- This could play a big role.

Is your K-N just the filter or the whole cold air kit? If it's just the filter then the air is too restricted coming in, IMO.

Dahhh, you have the SS. I would still try a cold air kit, regardless.

The first thing to try that won't cost you anything is to run w/o the hypertech programming. For some it works for most it doesn't appear to.

Also, try running with the stock MAF, if you can get one. You have to find the right combo between program, no program, stock MAF, ported MAF,etc.

the elevation is around 720' so it's not that high.

Remove the Hypertech programming and try it... Unless something has changed, their power programming retards the timing...

The other thing, and please don't take this as a flame, is perhaps shifting? I am guessing you have an M6 because of the 4.10's... Try powershifting around 5600 and see what happens. MPH is all about horsepower but ET is about shifting. You have a pretty decent MPH for your mods but you could be losing time on your shifts.

When I was starting out my car would go 13.6's at 100 even with shorties, cat back, cold air and a shifter. You have much better mph than I did so I would expect you on the low side of 13.5 easily.

Getting a decent ET is not easy. It takes practice.

I do shift with the clutch and I have been told not to do that, but I cant afford a new tranny at this time.

Thanks for all the help

103 mph should get you around a 13.3-13.4 ET with a 1.8 60'
Therefore, I am led to beleive that you are losing time on your shifts. When mine was running 103 mph traps, I was running 13.50-13.60 ETs quite easily on street tires with a 2.0-2.1 60'.

As for the Hypercrap programming, I have one of those Hypertech Power tuning modules (the one that rides piggyback on the pcm), and during a dyno session, I found it to be worth 4-5 RWHP and a bit smoother curve under the peak. Your results may vary, however. I only had it because it was on the car when I bought the thing.

Just my .02. I have an auto with the mods in my sig. I am at the same elevation and have run 13.70 @ 102 with a 1.98 60 ft. I have also read that 102 should get me in low 13s, so what gives? The car spins for about 5 feet than hooks good. And i dont have to shift, so thats not a variable, so i dont think thats to bad. Just remember, even though theyre computer controlled, fuel injected, etc, etc, theyre still mass produced, and no two cars are the same. Just like some new ss camaros run 12.99s bone stock and some run 13.80s, like i said just my .02. Prorac1

Prorac1,102 might get low 13's with a dead hook and killer air. would need a 60' time in the 1.8's and really good air. I was going around 13.5's@102-3.

Air quality, traction all have a part in the ET.

Honestly I think Hoosier slicks are a bit overkill for your setup and are probably slowing you down on the big end. I'd try a drag radial.

I bet you it is the ported MAF.
The hypertech program max's out your timing and leans out your fuel just before detonation.
So your ported MAF is telling the computer it is getting less air, therefore giving you less fuel.
Do you have a 160deg stat? If not you should put one in. The hypertech will actually decrease your power without one. A hot engine is prone to detonation which will activate the knock sensor and retard your timing, which is the same thing the ported MAF is probably doing. So you have those 2 factors against you.
