Will a 6 speed car run okay with an A4 program?

I'm doing a 6 speed conversion this weekend, and I didn't have anything done with the computer yet. Will the car run with the automatic computer? Can I drive it around for a while like this? I know the speedo will be off, but is there any other problems I'll have?

i think the computer will be fine...

you have to worry about the wire harness. the harness has to be split (the auto shifter part) to show the 6 different wires. 2 are for the hatch, 2 are for reverse lights, and 2 are for the neutral safety switch...good luck!

if you hook up the wires for the lights and stuff the only thing you have to worry about is the speedo reading slow. How slow depends on the gears your running, stock or aftermarket.
Also if most of your gauges dont work check the fuse going to the pcm its a red 10amp I think. Mine blew out and the car quit charging the battery. Found that out 10 miles thru my first test drive when my lights when out and car was barely running at 2am
Reverse is a PITA to get into on mine, wont go in unless iam moving even just a little bit. Might be wiring issues or it might not

Goodluck!!!

i doubt it, i tried a auto program on my m6 and it wouldn't let me shift for some reason, i tried changing all kinds of things but ended up taking my stock program and copying tables over to it for spark and fuel ect...

you can always try...

Reverse will work, but you will have to put it in gear (reverse only) while the car is off. Either that or pull the reverse lockout solenoid out until you get the computer reprogrammed.

I tried borrowing a friend's A4 pcm when i fried mine and reverse will not work due the the reverse lockout solenoid.

Yup. My car was accidentally programmed with an A4 program. I wasn't too concerned about not getting into reverse when the car was stationary, because you can physically overpower the solenoid. THe problem was the solenoid deactivated when you were going above 5 mph. I've ground reverse a few times when going into reverse instead of 5th.

after flipping that syncro once, believe me, it's worth crawling under the car and disconnecting that pos.

my trans got all screwed up and would let me put the car in 2-3-4 when i used an auto program...not sure why. reprogramed and it went away?

Can you just take that solenoid out and put a plate over it? I guess its function is to prevent you from shifting into reverse when moving.

Now that's really weird..

I had a '96 that I did the conversion for back in '00. I didn't have a problem, and ran the auto PCM for 2-3 days while waiting on my M6 PCM to come in. I could have had it flashed at the dealer for $45, but didn't find that out until later.

BTW the reverse lockout is usually hard at first, but after a few times it's pretty easy to push it in. wiring it up like factory is pretty simple too. Also the 3rdgen guys wire it to the brake light switch.

didn't read every post here.. maybe it was said..
Reverse Solinoid can be wired to a switch to make it work.. you can also force the solonoid to get into reverse until u rig it up... by switch i mean just that.. an extra switch somewhere.. or what i did.. the brake switch.. you always put your foot on the brake to go in reverse... been awhile since i was under the car.. but believe the solonoid is just +12V and Neg.. anyway.. not a big deal to bypass the computer.
