Why did I lose communications? Please help!

I was using freescan one day and it just stopped working. Ok, so I thought the cable was a little loose so I tightened it up at the serial port. Still nothing.

I have been troubleshooting all I can as I don't know much about computers. Here is what I have tried. I tried Freescan, PCMcomm, and Tunercat. Tunercat said "cable failure" when I tried Flashread. I tried a brand new cable from AKM(which worked before) in another car and it didn't work either. So chances are the cable is good.

When I try to use PCMcomm, no values on the screen change. But if you look at the comm data, it is there. You can watch it constantly change.

Also in Freescan, if you press the start button, nothing happens. If you then go to another tab such as "engine data" there is nothing there either. BUT, if you click back on the control tab, you will see that the program received some data from the pcm.

I haven't done anything to the laptop other than add people pc but it worked after that for a while. I uninstalled people pc and reinstalled Freescan to see if that would work and still nothing.

Please, I am tired of not being able to tune my car.

I just had this problem, let me tell you, it's VERY annoying. Most likely, it is the serial cable part of your cable, the one that plugs into the serial port and into the converter. You can test the cable, converter, and port by using Hyperterminal. There is an document on www.akmcables.com about doing this, I don't want to write everything out here, because it is quite long. It's easy for people who don't know a lot about serial communications to read and use. When you are testing you will be able to tell which part is not sending a signal and replace that part. Most likely it is the serial cable, which is the cheapest and easiest part to get.

I tried enabling all the ports, disabling all but the serial but neither worked.

I also did the hyperterminal thing but that didn't work so I put the cable on my brother's computer and it did. I tried connecting the pins right at the port and it still didn't work. I think that a connection has failed at the port itself.

Any more ideas?

Your ALDL port or your serial port? Possible on both accounts, but usually it's the cable. When you tested in hyperterminal, did you make sure the ALDL part wasn't plugged in? Did you test the serial port itself?

I tested at the and of the cable(unhooked from converter) and at the serial port itself. Nothing. Although when I was in hyperterminal before I disconnected the cable to test it(according to AKMs site) it was getting something.

I talked to a guy who works on a builds computers and he said I may have shorted the terminals on the mother board when the cable broke. I replaced the motherboard with another one I had and it worked. That must have been it.
