What do I need to get started tuning the car myself?

Okay this is going to sound like a dumb newbie question, which I guess it is. None of the local dyno shops do LT1 tuning, only LS1. I want to get a laptop and LT1edit so I can start learning how to tune the car myself. What would be a good laptop that is not extremely expensive, because this would be my only use for it right now? Also, I know I need a harness to connect the laptop to the car, but is there anything else? How does the LT1edit program work and is there a better program out there? I just basically need to know what I need to start tuning the car myself, as I have no experience with this nor do I have any of the needed parts. Thanks!!

Info on LT1 edit, akm cables. I would look at TunerCat also, it's less money. Read the LT1edit list.

Well, since your name is snksknr94, I'm going to assume you have a 94 Z or Firebird/TA, so I'd say you don't need to waste the money on LT1Edit. Go to www.tunercat.com and get that, it's much cheaper, about $100 for all the software. For the cable, go to www.akmcables.com, it'll cost about $100 too. As for a laptop, an old Pentium will work fine. I have a Pentium 120 Mhz and it works great for logging, editting, and programming. Don't need much to run these programs. Try Ebay for a laptop, they usually have some old ones like mine for about $100-$200 that would work just fine.

Cool, thanks fellas I'll check out tunercat. Yeah, I just need the laptop to run the program, don't need it for work or anything like that. Thanks again!

I would like to know how to start burning my own chips for my also. Can anyone give some details on where and what to buy as far as equipment goes. It's for a 92 TPI computer.

You'd need tunercat and the definition file for the 92 TPI (not sure what is it, but it's listed at tunercat's website). You'd also need an EPROM programmer/reader and a UV eraser to erase the EPROM before you program it. Go here, http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml they have a ton of info on third gen programming that should help you out.
