What about the chip?

I've been talking to a friend of mine who recently bought a 2003 Mustang GT. As we were looking around, every site listing mods and the like had CHIP. Didn't seem to matter what they had done but it had a chip in it.

In the time I've been looking around on this site (despite the low numbers on my user name its been for quite some time) I've never really come across the chip as being used except in some V6s. Is this just because the Mustangs engine is newer and has more computer controlls

Just wondering...

Don't really need to hear "because Mustangs suck" as an answer either.

'93 was the last year that an F-body had a removable chip.

'94+ uses EEPROM.

Chip is kind of an old way of doing things, at least in GMs terms. But, with that you could drive the car and only get a chip in the mail, instead of having downtime, for those without thier own programming gear, so there is a +/- to both sides.

I prefer not having to burn my own chips, or rely on mail order. There is aftermarket programming gear for the Fords though, although what I have seen is more $.
