Post weird, stupid ses light.

ok, i've had this problem for a while speed up to 65, slow to around 50 light comes on. If i stay at a steady highway speed, say 70-75 the light goes off and comes on when i hit 50's. In my efforts to kill the light, i've changed the 02 sensors, egr valve, plugs, wires, coils and put in a 160 stat for performance mind. still have the ses light. also the past month i made a 7 hour 85 mph blast up to chicago, she ran great until i got into the 15 mph traffic, where she stumbled from 500-1000 rpm almost like an old muscle cam lope. but she eventually died in the traffic and restarted just fine. the problem has escalted to doing it on start up and dying before i have a chance to put it in gear. there is also a plume of bluish, fuel smelling smoke at startup and there is a fuel smell while it idles. the car has 98000 miles but the engine only has 68000 as i smoked the original one. this is a 3.4l 1994. any ideas is appreciated.

If its spewing unburnt gas then I hate to say it but sounds like an opti. Try and find someone with a scanner in your area or "borrow" one from a parts store with a good return policy.

My 94 Camaro used to throw a SES at random with seemingly no problem, until about 3 months later it would not run at all (bit by bit it got worse), due to oil and engine coolant inside the Opti, throwing a low resolution pulse error.

Not saying thats the problem, but my symptoms were similar, I had to race the engine at stop lights to keep it from dying, until I finally figured out it was the Opti after breaking down and buying a cable to troubleshoot instead of passing guesses replacing parts that didn't need replacing.

You could save a LOT of money by not replacing good parts if you scanned the code and fixed the problem the first time. Take it to AutoZone and have them scan it, or you could use FreeScan, PCMcomm, DataMaster, etc.

1. I have gone to autozone but their cheap lil key doesn't work with my car. I'm not as stupid as i sound.
2. i went and got the car hooked to a computer yesterday, said the crank sensor was bad and the egr valves are still bad. He cleared the code, and on my way home the light came back on. I've since taken the egr valve off and carb and choke cleaned it, changed the crank sensor and took it back to him. The light still comes on. It's beginning to be a ECM problem. I have an appointment at 8 am monday morning at the dearlership to have my computer gone through. later.

I don't recall anyone saying you were stupid.

In 1994 there was no crank position sensor, however that could be an Optispark code (this is the distributor, + electronics inside). If the 3.4L had a CPS then thats news to me, its possible though. It only showed on the Z28/SS etc during OBD II years however.

Stupid little key? Not sure what that is, if they were using a utility for a 1993 or previous vehicle though, that would not work.

I also agree with the not wasting money ordeal, thats why I got Freescan + cable, because I spent a bunch of time and money chasing things down by replacing perfectly good parts, when I found out I could scan and program my own PCM that was just too good to pass up!

Good luck

How much do one of those freescan things run? and the crank sensor is right next to the motor mount, forwards from the starter, straight up from the y-pipe, on the passenger side, not to mention a b**ch to get to. i'll find out monday whats up. later.

Freescan is free, you just need to buy a cable.

(freescan is linked)

Don't know much about the 3.4L setup, good luck with the situation.
