Tuning w/email tune OBD1...

I have a laptop and akm cable that I've used to run Datamaster on my 94 lt1...thinking about getting a tune form one of the vendors on this site. So how exactly does "email" tuning work? Do I need anything besides the laptop and cable to do this myself? Is the software (tunercats) included in the price? Do I need to be familiar with tuning or is it pretty simple? Trying to decide if I should send in my PCM or not..Oh and just suppose my laptop dies in the middle of this operation...what happens?

Can't you just use WinFlash?

Re: Tuning w/email tune OBD1...

Since I just got an email tune from MadZ28 ("madwolf" on here), I will explain the process. Just as an FYI, I am very pleased with my tune after putting about 100 miles on the car.

Go to madz28.com and fill out the customer information sheet, and make your payment.

You will then recieve your tune and a program to upload it to your car via email. Since you already have the laptop and cable, you do not need anything else. Load the uploader program on your computer, and load your tune to the PCM.

Some good information to know:
  • Unplug the fuse for your cooling fans before your start the upload process!!!!!
  • Turn of all power management on your laptop
  • Turn off your virus scanning software
  • Upload will take about 5 minutes
If the upload process gets interrupted for any reason, you PCM will be dead (ask me how I know ). So make sure you are prepared when you upload. After a successful upload of you new tune, have fun. I know I am!

A battery charger on the battery during download/uploading of the tune is a good idea, too.
