tuning a 383 for the first time, whats better.

I have never modified a computer controlled car before and I am currently waiting for my motor to be finished . I would like to know what is the best route to go when it comes time to tune the pcm . I am capable of figuring out and rebuilding my own home computers when they break. I have access to a laptop. Should I just purchase the software and cable to program my ODB2 PCM with help from this site or should I just do the mail order tune and run what they did? What would be the best?

I would suggest someone local, or better yet a dyno tune.
