shift point question please help asap

Ok first off i have a 94 firebird lt1 auto. I am getting ready to get a mail order tune my only problem is i am wondering if i have the wot shift points set to 6550 and the rev limiter to 7100 will i be able to put the gear shift seletor in low1 and hold it to 7000 or will it automatically shift to second at 6500. I just really dont want to set the wot shift points at 7000 but just for the occasonally drag racing would like to be able to run it to 7000.

You'll never hit that rpm with the cam in your sig not even close.

But to answer your question there are tables that dictate what the pcm does when manual gear selection is used. You can set it to manaully shift no matter what when you select a gear. There will be some lag though when you pull to the next gear.

Imo, its kind of a non issue when its been tuned properly to account for shifting lag, it will shift faster and more correctly than you every last time.

Stock shift points are set by speed, not RPM. A programmer would have to modify the programming to ignore speed and use RPM only. They just have to know what you want.

Since it is a dual purpose car and you have a 1994 PCM, you could have them alter the performance mode tables for your custom shift pattern, so that you could also use the stockish settings on the street. You could just toggle between the two when needed.

Shift point in D is based on tps% and mph. Shift point at wot is based on both mph and rpm flags both have to be set in order to command a shift in D at WOT.

Look in the sticky for info about tuning for full manual use in 1 2 3 positions.

The point where the shift commanded is not generally where the shift happens there is a lag before the shift most especially on a worn stock trans. But if you have a very good built trans it will shift very quickly and you can command the shift later. Mostly though its a cut and check operation there to get it where you want.

Shift points with a modded a4 car at part throttle are a very touchy subject and I can think of at least 3-4 ways to have them set up depending on how a person drives or how the driver prefers the car would act.

Thanks for the help guys. The tranny is built as I worked at a tranny shop with a 2800 stall converter.

To go back to the question in the OP. "Would Kickdown Mode override manual mode shift points ?' I have not been able to find anything on this, looks like testing would be the only way to answer this unless someone has already tried holding 100% TPS in lower gear till it either shifts (kickdown takes over) or hits the limiter (no KD).

Manual overrides all other settings if set correctly. It will even downshift to 1st at any speed if you pull it down there. It only follows what you do with the stick if its set up correctly.
