Science behind O2 sims.

Just a quick question, how does a O2 sim. work. Does it trick the PCM with a false input letting it believe a cat. is there and fully functional, or does it just force the PCM into a Not Ready status. I'm just curious after being rejected on my emissions test today, my Catalyst Efficiency came up as a Not Ready. I did just install this PCM a few days ago, and I had some 02 related codes deleted today as well right before the test. Could that be the problem? Maybe it just needs a few days of normal operation like the emissions inspector told me.

Re: Science behind O2 sims.

i hear ppl pass with sims and ppl fail with sims,

most likely ull have to drive it around for a few days to complete the ready states, it can take 15 mile or it can take a 100 ,

So far I have driven it for 60 miles and about an hour and a half. Jeez, I just wish I could pass emissions and be done with this long tube nightmare for awhile.

It will probably take longer than that. I am nearing 200 miles and my catalyst efficiency monitor has yet to run. See

Yeah, I drove it for another solid two days and I passed!! The results sheet is proudly attached to the refrigerator.

Did all your monitors run? If not, how many were not ready? And in what state do you live? Just curious. Someone told me that in MD they will pass you on a retest no matter how many monitors are not ready.

Re: Science behind O2 sims.

When I got rejected, I posted 3 Not Readys. I went twice that day and got rejected. They were the Heated 02, EGR recirculation, and rear 02s. The state of IL only allows 1. After a couple of days of driving, I passed with flying colors and had no Not Readys posted. As for your regulations in MD, your best bet is just to call up the customer service of the emissions dept. and get a straight answer that way. I listened to alot of different things from people about IL emissions and most of the responses were incorrect. Alot of states are different and so is their testing. I got the answers I was looking for by making the phone call.

I'm so glad Kansas has no emissions tests.

Actually I'm in Mass - I was just quoting some guy from MD. I know what you mean about getting different answers. Even the guys at the garage don't know how many "not ready's" you can have and still pass. Now what you say is unusual. Most people claim 96-99's can have 2, and only 1 for 2000 and newer....

To the people who think they'll never have this test - watch out. It's only a glorified computer system. Relatively inexpensive compared to the IM240 w/3 gas analyzer. Many states that had no previous emissions test are now implementing this test for obd2 (96+) vehicles. The rest of NY state (besides NYC) and NH are two recent examples.

Your right, passing the obd-II test can be trickier then some might think. It is more involved than making sure your SES light is off before going to the lanes.
