Problems Programming Flash Chips with PP2

I have been trying to program 2 AT29C256 chips for a 93 LT1 camaro. I just finished installing the motor yesterday and was trying to program the chips but had some problems.

I was able to read the stock chip and save the file to disk. I then edited the file using Tunercat with the appropriate definition file and saved it to disk. I then used the WinPP2 program to program the new chip. On the first chip I used, I did a "blank eprom check" and it said the chip was erased. I then programmed it with the stock 93 bin file and it programmed properly and verified correctly. For the second chip, I again did a "blank eprom check" and it said the chip was not erased. There was no erase command in WinPP2 and I was told it was not necessary to erase these chips so I tried to program it with the new bin file I created in Tunercat. When I hit Program, the box at the top of the screen that scrolls the chip addresses while programming said 0000 then 5555 then it tried to verify the program and it obviously said it did not program correctly. I tried rogramming a second time and this time it said something like "this chip can not be programmed". I then tried to reprogram the first chip that I had written the stock bin file to and the same sequence occured as the second chip. It did not take the program. I'm wondering if maybe I do need to erase these chips first, and if so, how do I do that? Any help anyone could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,
I don't have a PP2, but I used to have one and I remember an erase function on it. I always erase all chips before I work, even if they're brand new.

Hmm, I'm using the windows version of the software and there is definately no erase function within it. I'll have to see if there is a seperate program to use for erasing the chips. Do you recall what program you were using that had the erase function?

Thanks,
Rob

I was using the DOS version, but I do remember that I used the windows one a couple of times too. (I'm not sure if I erased anything though)
I still have the software, so I'll check when I get home later today.

Yeah, my next step is to check the DOS version when I get home tonight and see if it has an erase function. If not, I'm going to try programming it with the DOS version also to see what happens.

Is it possible that I ruined the chip by not erasing it first and having the bad programming attempts made on it?
