Been coming on every few days, usually when hot or in traffic.
I remember my buddy had his bird throw this code and we r2 his air pump.
Is this usually the cause? Or could there be something else?

 

The PCM cycles the AIR pump when its supposed to be turned off, and looks to see if the O2 sensors indicate a lean condition, confirming that there is actually flow to the exhaust system. Anything that prevents air flow to the system could cause the code, including:

-non-operating AIR pump

-frozen AIR system check valves

-holes burned in rubber hoses near the check valves

This code always puzzles me, because if you go to the GM tech website, it shows the above as P0410 for 96/97, and then changes it to P1416 for 1998 and newer. But it appears it was being used in 96, and Shoebox's DTC list shows it as P1416.

Yeah I figued to check the check vlv as it is alot cheaper to change... its weird thought you would think if the pump went out it would come on every time i drive it but its more like one out of five. all driving the same amount.
Ill dig into it deeper next weekend when I get back and let you know what I find. And thanks for the incite.
