OBDII / OBDI Laptop cable Conversion

I need to hook a laptop to my 94 Z. My friend has everything we need but his cable is for a 95 T/A. How can we convert it to work on a 94 Z? I know that the 95 has 16 pins while the 94 has 12 pins. Does anyone have a link or some information to help me out?

The Trans Am guy is an electronic tech and could prolly make anything work, so feel free to get real technical. He also has a hypertech for the 95 if that could help at all.

Thanks

If he doesnt have one of the real nice molded connectors like you find on the power programmers then you can carefully remove the pins from the connector and simply plug them into your ALDL port where they belong. Check out shoebox's page to find a schematic of your port(the 12-pin) and his port(the 16-pin) to see exactly where the pins transfer to on yours. www.akmcables.com also has a schematic or if you cant figure it out then buy a cable for you 94 from Andrew.

It might depend on if you are only going to scan or also program. I know you can adapt a 12 pin cable to the 16 pin like this for scanning. Methinks it would also work in the opposite direction. Don't know if it would work for programming, though.

If you don't get the conversion working get a new one from AKM Cables, their cables are awesome.

Well I dont need to program I just need to run a datamaster or something to find my miss/detonation. Thanks shoebox, and how would I connect it? Same way just reversed? What pins go where on a OBD I? Thanks. This is from a Thinkpad to the 94z.

I am strapped for time and money, so the conversion is all I can do right now.

not to thread hijack but im looking for some info on this as well. My friend has a 95, im looking at a 94 camaro. I would like to purchase the cable from www.mastach.com...is it possible for one to work for both. Does the 95 have an OBDII STYLE connector? even though they are both OBDI.

What goes one way should go the opposite.

That picture and this should be all that's needed to explain.

I just used stuff that I had laying around. I think the terminals on the 12 pin end are just flat, female disconnects. On the 16 pin end, I think I used some straight pieces of a large paper clip and soldered it on the end of the wire.

The car interface is ok, but....it turns out we only have the hypertech cable, any way we can make that fit or work on the laptop? What pins on the 9 pin male port on the computer need used? and same with the 15 pin female hypertech...?

There is some good info in here and really belongs in the programming/diagnostic forum. I'll move it there so it will be available for searches in the right forum.

Yes it will. That cable does not come with a crimped end on it, just three wires that you manual put into the correct pins. I think I read that you only want to scan, so this cable is perfect and remember that you can not program with this cable.

Actually, you can program (94-95) with that Mastach cable, I already did it - worked fine with TunerCat.
