Obd Ii To Obd I Conversion

HI GUYS. I WANT TO DO THE OBD I CONVERSION TO MY 97 Z, BUT I HEARD THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO CHANGE BESIDES THE ECU UNIT IS THE KNOSCK SENSOR. I BOUGHT THE SENSOR FOR THE CORRECT ECU (1995), BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF IT IS THE KNOCK MODULE I NEED TO REPLACE OR THE SENSOR ON THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK. OR IF ANYTHING AT ALL BESIDES THE ECU NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE THE LT4 KNOCK MODULE. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AN UNPLUG AND PLUG IN OPERATION AS FAR AS THE SWAPPING OF ECU'S GOES. PLEASE LET ME KNOW FOR ALL YOU OTHER GUYS THAT DID THE CONVERT. THANKS!

you need the knock sensor that screws into the drain hole on the pass side of the motor down where the dipstick goes into the block. replace that and plug in an OBD1.. youll be good to go.

I have a PCM if you need one.. PM me if you are interested.

hey turbo z, thanks for the info, I won't need your ecu tho, I already have one. just waiting for the rest of my mods that I ordered to come in so I can install all of it and have it custom tuned. Anyway, I noticed you wrote in your home page that you have 94-95 headers on there with your OBD I conversion. I'm curious now, because I have 97 MAC shorty headers with off road y-pipe. Will this affect my OBD I conversion?? Please don't tell me I need new headers!! Mine cost over $1,000 from purchase to install because they are jet hot coated, etc..

You don't need new headers. I believe your tach may not work properly tho... if this happens msg back here for the solution.

really? hmm. what kind of difference would it make? a drastic one? do you think the tach may be more than 200 rpm off?? I've never heard of that possibility for a problem before. Would it be easier to buy new headers for a 95 car to match my 95 ecu?

headers will make no difference and im not sure why he thinks the tach would be off. the reason i got the 94-95 style headers is b/c they are a better design than whats available for the later years.

I'm helping a friend put a 97 lt1 in a 7? el camino. he wants to do the obd conversion for ease of installation/programming. All I have to do is change the knock sensor and ecm? no wiring differences?? I know GM is consistant w/ somethings, but I find the ecm wiring is too good to be true! what about a4 people?

Same connections on a A4 as well. Its just a straight hookup, nothing needs to be changed. Heck, there is even a resistor mod in the pcm that is easy to do which then allows the obd2 ks to work in the obd1 pcm.

the ecu port (ALDL) will stay the same, you will have to use a connector designed for the newer pinout. I did the conversion to obd1, just changed the pcm and knock sensor and all is fine.

Just a note, akmcables has a aldl cable that includes both odb1 and odb2 style connectors specifically for odb1 pcms with an odb2 connector. and its only 30$ more than the normal cable.
