Need to replace PCM & key

Hello everyone. Right this is in reference to my earlier post when the car wasnt starting. The chevy dealer here has now told me that it is the PCM and the key that has to be replaced thats why the car's not starting (and he did also give me a hefty estimate as american parts here cost more that they do in the US).

Is there another way out (perhaps by removing/disengaging the security system altogether as i'm not really worried about my car being stolen) and can i still drive the car??
Any light would be appreciated.

It is probably the BCM that needs replacing, not the Pcm. I dont think the key and bcm would both need replacing. It seems it would be one or the other. There is a vats bypass trick with a resistor, do a search and you should find it. But it doesnt bypass the bcm, so if its bad you gotta replace it. As to answer the question in your other post, the security light would come on when you turn the key on and stay on.

Hi there, thanks for your feedback. Yes you're right the BCM. Since I'm a newie to all this, can you help me elaborate how i can perform the "Vats bypass trick with a resister". And I presume that it's a vital part that has to be there, that the car cannot run after disengaging it. Many thanks again.

Thanks for it tapout911, that was helpful in understanding the situ. Now I'm gonna go back to the dealer garage (who intend to rip me off) and tell him the foll:

1. Whether he has the SOS to override the security system to match the key's resistance - a quick fix
OR if not,
2. insert a new key with the matching resistance and see if car starts
OR if not the last resort
3. Do as he says - replace BCM & maybe key also if it has malfunctiond

Am i right in what i'm gonna say? (cos I dont want to sound like an imbasile by saying the above).
Thanks again for your feedback.

Re: Need to replace PCM & key

Not sure which tunercat software to download, and where to run the cables into from my laptop. I shall go to the garage anyways tomorrow to see what can be done. thanks.

Re: Need to replace PCM & key

just buy a VATS bypass module from ebay by baker electronix. costs around 25 bucks. hooks up directly to the PCM, so you do not even need the BCM. easy fix and they work. I've used them on an LS1 in a 68 camaro and a LT1 for a 89 camaro.
