Need a little advice...trying tuning on my own

The car is a 383 LT1 with a P1-SC and Alkycontrol and Im hoping to see about 12 psi

I have a basic base line already. What I am looking to do is check my a/f ratio and play with the timing a little since my latest round of mods. Would it be better to use the v/e tables to get my fuel where I want it first and then mess with the timing? If not whats the best way to go about it?

I want to get right around 11:1 and if I need more fuel then I want to increase my methanol but if I need less fuel then I want to take fuel out of the ve tables.

As far as timing go can I just increase timing a couple of degrees across the board until I get knock or the horsepower levels off and then back it of a couple of degrees just to keep it safe?

What do you guys think

Do you have a wideband to check your A/F? Usually timing adjustments need to be done first then fuel although if fuel is way off you'd want it close before timing adjustments.

I've always worked the other way around. I get the fuel as close as I can, and then adjust the timing. Why do you want the a/f at 11:1? If you're going to adjust your ve table for fuel, I take it that you're running a closed loop, speed density tune?

Im sorry not the VE tables but the % change @ WOT. I figure 11:1 is a good safe spot for my FI setup

I'm not familiar with FI setups, but I would think that 11:1 would still be way too rich. You definitely need a wideband setup.

I wouldn't touch anything on a FI motor without a wideband. Way too easy to hurt it.

Oh, I know better than that. I planned on doing it at one of the local dynos that have a wideband

By time you get the fuel dialed in, paying for a dyno, you could almost of bought your own wideband O2 setup. Plus, your own allows you to do idle and part throttle tuning as well, which some dynos don't let you mess with.

That is very true. Im just a little gun shy after toasting my last motor trying to tune it on my own because no one around my area knows how to do it. I know the basics but apparently not enough

Re: Need a little advice...trying tuning on my own

Well it was kind of weird. I was adjusting the % change @ WOT tables. I tired increasing the values and it wouldnt get any richer then I tried decreasing the value and it got a little richer so I kept going but it never got an richer than that. I was just running it way to lean. Im pretty suire I was just out of injector. I only had an expired version of datamaster at the time so I couldnt check my inj dtc. It finally gave up on me while racing my brother in law on hjis gsxr

Probably so. Try it yourself, and if you run into anything like that, ask it here on the board and we'll get you straightened up. Plus, if you get a wideband setup, you can tune other people's cars for mucho profit.

I have thought about that. Just not too many 94-95 cars around here anymore. But it would be nice to make a little cash on the side and quit paying others to do something I have the equipment to do
