need advice on OBDX computers

I have a 97 Z (auto tranny) with OBD2. My brother has a 95 Formula (6spd) with OBD1. I would like to buy TunerCat so I can tune both cars and not have to buy seperate software and cables. So I want 1 cable, 1 software program, and 1 logging program. Seems simple, but how do I go about this?
I know i need to convert the 97 to OBD1, but will I need an OBDI out of a 95 car so both cars have the same connection? And does this OBD1 have to be out of an AUTO car, or can I reprogram a computer to be auto even if it's out of a manual car?

It's late, let me know if this makes no sense at all!
Thanks in advance.

Re: need advice on OBDX computers

yup, just buy a used obd1 pcm and a knock sensor and put them in the 97, then flash the used computer with a stock 95 auto bin(so the trans lock up works right) then make your changes in the used pcm so that gear ratio matches, ext,,,

u will need and obd1 to obd2 adapter or use jumper harness because the 97 car will have an obd2 style connector, gm makes a nice obd1 to obd2 connector adapter that is what i use

first off, the 95 has an OBD2 connector plug. Get tunercat. It can be used for any VIN. I can get you a stock 95 A4 tune if you want it. you can get a cable from AKM cables that will work fine.

You can use freescan for OBD1 cars.

well, I already have an OBD1 computer out of a 94 Z. Could I put it in the 97? Does the doner OBD1 not have to be out of 95 to make this all work?

also, what is this jumper harness you're talking about? is this something i need even though both cars will have OBD2 style connector plugs?

94 PCMs are identical to 95 ones less the software inside which is easily replaceable. You can definetely use that PCM for your conversion, just use a 95 file.

Ion, is there any way then to transfer my current tune to the OBD1? ie, is it as simple as you sending me the bin you used in my tune, or is it going to require starting from scratch?
i hate to waste the money i've already spent on the current tune, but i would just like OBD1 so I can log and then see if anymore gains can be had.

Re: need advice on OBDX computers

You have to start from scratch. Even the dyno air fuel ratio readings will be different between an OBD1 and an OBD2 with the same air fuel ratio table.

Drop me an email reminder. I'll re-do it for you when I have some extra time. (most probably next week)
