Re: Megasquirt opinions

The major drawback is that it doesn't support ignition (at the moment at least)

Re: Megasquirt opinions

i'm running megasquirt on a 2002 6.0L vortec engine. the megasquirt controls fuel and spark. i am running wasted spark coil packs like those on a 3800 v6. i use a Ford EDIS 8 ignition module.

i have full control of fuel and timing in real time. its closed loop with o2 sensor feedback.

view my website i have more info.

Very nice!

I know you used to be able to find vendors who sell already put together megasqirts.. Might be something to think about if the soldering looks a bit daunting

Re: Megasquirt opinions

A friend of mine got megasquirt for his turbo volvo and another for his datsun, I think he is going 2.8 tubo in his 240. Im not sure how they are going to learn to tune it or even where to begin learning how... hey rooster any good advice there? I mean I know you just gotta mess with it but Im not sure they or I know even where to begin BTW did you go to school to learn how to tune EFI or did you learn it on your own?

Re: Megasquirt opinions

I just learned it on my own.

All speed density systems are very simular to each other. I reccomend finding a good article about tuning Accel DFI or something like that and it should make it all clear to you.

Re: Megasquirt opinions

Bringing this one back from the dead...

I just did a couple hrs of reading up on the MS system and it looks very interesting! Stock PCM is such a PITA when it comes to running anything mildly extreme and the MS system complete is probably no more than $800. People pay that much just to convert a opti to fire 8 coils! You can have an entirely new ECU that will control basicaly any ignition and fuel system you can dream up.

Only problem is you have to build it yourself.. some kits are complete but I didnt find the one that also controls spark.

Just think of the possibilites...

Re: Megasquirt opinions

I am currently in the process right now of running the Megasquirt and spark on my LT1 and COMPLETELY eliminating the optispark. Got two MSD coil packs for the EDIS, an EDIS 8 module off of a Mark VIII, a reluctor (Css304) from Napa and some plug wires off of a 97 cobra (MSD of course) that I will have to cut to length. My friend builds the computers and we will fab up the rest of the wiring and such together. I will let all know how it goes and will have a video of the engine running with the optispark connector unplugged!!!!!

Re: Megasquirt opinions

cool beans man sounds awesome... What does FAST and all the others give you that this wouldnt? Also is there anyway to retain motor functions other than fuel and spark like the fuel evap and EGR, etc...?

Re: Megasquirt opinions

All other system are ran by the factory PCM...the only thing that the MS controls are fuel/spark/nitrous...EVAP/EGR/AIR are and or will be gone at some point.

The cost of FAST is WAYYYYYYYYYY too much for my price range...megasquirt will do what I want to do for a fraction of the cost...plus my friend is excellent with the system, has built and tuned over 40 different cars with it, so I have access to some free tuning!!!

Re: Megasquirt opinions

<------another member going to MegaSquirt in my '69. The project is easy to assemble, I hadn't soldered in 15 years when I bought my kit. In 3 nights all the parts were soldered. All I have left is to build the wiring harness and finish plumbing the car. The support web board is comprised of some very smart people, both EE and ECE types that are total car guys. You can download the software and look at the options. For spark control you are going to want MegaSquirt'nSpark Extra. This will also do dual table fueling for nitrous or staged injection. There is traction control, fan control, wastegate control, idle control and other stuff like shift lights. The system has a fairly steep learning curve as to what firmware, circuit modifications you need to make but if you take your time its no problem and there is always somebody there to help.
