Just bought a DFI 7 ECU

Just curious if anyone here is runnign a DFI 7 ecu on a DAILY DRIVER with a big cam ? I keep hearing people say it sucks for daily drivers but Joe Overton tells me with the right tuning it will be just fine. I would like to hear from anyone WITH EXPERIENCE running a DFI 7 on a daily driver.

Thanks,
-TaZ

Joe's right. Should be no problem at all, but the right tuneup is critical... if you've never done one before, you may need some help to get it dialed in. If it's not already, make sure you also get the ECM updated to the latest version of firmware (v3.2).
I've done testing on trucks with a 454 BB and a 502/502 that both had the DFI 7 on them. Drove like stock and got pretty good mileage too.

just curious, can i get the firmware update from the DFI7 website on mrgasket.com ? The DFI ecu has not arrived yet but I bought it from LT1 DAVE and the motor he had the DFI on was very similar to my setup. However he said it was never a daily driver so It was never tuned for part throttle driving.

Can you tell me quickly how to check the firmware and software versions and update them. I am very advanced computer user and am very good at tuning with LT1_Edit. Im sure I can handle DFI 7 with a little help from Joe Overton and the tools he told me to invest in ( EGT Monitor ) Joe O sure is a nice guy

You need to send your ECM in to ACCEL to have the firmware updated -- if you need it. Only the interface software is available on the internet.

The latest version of the software can be downloaded from Here

ECM firmware should be handwritten on the back of the ECM. If not, fire up the software, connect online to the ECM, and from the HELP menu, pick the ABOUT item. The software and ECM version numbers will be listed on the lower left side of the screen.

I have a couple simple questions for you guys if you don't mind. I'm just now starting to get interested in the DFI7 and was wondering if this is only used on speed density cars and not on mass air ? Also what does the unit cost ? Thanks for the help guys!!

Speed density only, works with up to 3 BAR map.
Runs around $1700 for full sequential unit including harness, all sensors, and programming cable/software.

You need a Cam Synch signal for sequential. I'd get a DFI Dual Synch and be done with the opti.

sorry for the ignorance, but what is an DFI dual sync ?
do you mean a distributor? someone suggested I machine the LT1 intake to accept a real distributor and be done with the opti.

DFI Dual Synch Distributor provides both Crank and Cam signals. You'd still have to do some machining, but it will replace the opti and give you Plug 'N Play sequential. That's definitely the way I'd go.

TriPinTaz, do have the correct injector offsets for the LUCAS 42s? I've been looking for them.

I run a Gen 7 DFI set up in my daily driven '68 Camaro. Make sure your alternator is producing full voltage (around 14 volts), and make sure you fuel system is top notch. Don't half *** the fuel system! I had a fuel pump that was on its way out and I didn't realize it. Tuning was a nightmare! I couldn't figure out what the problem was. The fuel pump finally went out, and I replaced it. The car immediately ran much better! Then I retuned it, and it runs great now. GOOD LUCK!
