How to tell if I have a reprogrammed chip?

I just bought a 1993 Z28. It already has a few bolt-ons. Cat-back, CAI, 3.73's, airfoil, 160 thermostat.... The fan comes on with the factory gauge down around 160-180. It is hard to tell what the actual temp is. I thought the fans on a stock computer come on around 200 degrees. I am new to LT1's and trying to figure out what parts this car might already have.

Thanks,
Rob

If the fans are coming on around 160-180, that *might* mean you have programming.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could pull the PCM out and have a look at it. Many custom programmers will put a sticker on the PCM when they program it. Also, if it had a Hypertech chip installed, the chip might have a label on it.

just pull the chip out, most likely it will have a piggy back chip, if it has one chip plugged into another then plugged into the computer then you have an aftermarket chip... ps hypertech = crap
there is a chance the stock chip was used for the programming but idk how many people actually take that route

Is the ECM under the hood or in the passenger kick panel?

I guess I could just go out in the cold and look.

On the 1994+ F-body cars, its in the engine compartment near the passenger side hood hinge. But, I don't know if the 1993 cars had it in the same place. I guess if you see a big ball of wires in that area, that's where it'd be.

Let us know how quick you can get out to the car and get the hood open in the cold. ;-)

Thanks. It looks like I have the ultra-high-performance Hypertech thermomaster! WooHoo!
