Help, I want to start programming.

I am a very active member of f-body.com and some of the guys over there sent me here to ask this question. I am new to tuning and do not know very much.

My car was tuned by Ed Wright, and it runs strong, but seems overly rich and I just like to play so, I am thinking about starting to mess with the programming on my car. I want to convert the car to OBD1 and use the tunrecat software to avoid paying the 550 bucks for LT1 edit for OBD2. Is this a smart way to go? What must be done in order to convert? I was told its just a matter of swapping computers and the knock sensor. I can then load a basic program on the computer and start tuning from there. Anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything that I need to watch out for or consider? Any help or words of wisdom would be appreciated!

PCM4less and madz28 sell conversion pcms. Just plug and play. One thing you might have to worry about if your state does OBD2 scans. The OBD1 pcm will not pass. Then you would need to keep the OBD2 pcm and swap it back in for inspections.

I plan on doing the swap of the PCM for inspections. Thats not a concern.

I looked at pcmforless.com and saw the conversion package for $275. I also called another guy in the PCM tuning business and he said there is no reason to pay that because I could just get a used PCM and a different knock sensor. HE said the 94-95 PCM will plug right into my car. THe only difference is in the knock sensor. Is this true?

Also, besides the fact thats its cheaper, are there any other reasons for switching to OBDI?
