Question Help getting cable to work

I just bought a Mastach.com OBDI cable on eBay for my Camaro, and I'm trying to get it to work with my IBM Thinkpad 390X laptop. It passed the aldl-full communications test on my desktop computer, so I know the cable is fine, but can't get it to work on the laptop. I have a COM1 installed on the laptop, and the "Service" ID on the detail tab shows that it's a serial port. I see there are 2 ports on the back of the laptop, one male and one female. How do I know which one of those ports is COM1, and how can I figure out if that port is "active?" I tried to "install new hardware," but it didn't find anything. I've also tried disabling my internal modem, IR port, and network card. Is there any other tricks to try that you can think of?
