Getting started

After recently doing the installs listed in my sig, i found the problem that no one local is willing to tune my car for under $500, so ive decided that since i have other mods planned in the future, i might be better off to just go ahead and buy the cable/software needed and try my hand at tuning myself.

I know i need the cable and program to do the editing, along with a laptop. What i would like to know is if you guys would recommend someone new to tuning use Tunercat or LT1 edit.

Also, how difficult would it be for a newbie to take my car from the stock tune to one that would make the most of my mods? How does a self tune compare to a "professional" dyno tune or PCM4Less tune?

any info is greatly appreciated,

thanks

Dyno tuning is the best of course, but on a daily basis, esp. if you have a crazy car, being able to log/tune yourself is a big plus. TunerCat is cheaper I believe, and does basically everything LT1edit does, so I'd probably go with that. Self tune can't really be compared to a dyno tune or PCM4LESS tune, because it all depends on who's doing the 'self tune'. It could be better than PCM4LESS's pretty easily since you have more data available to you about your specific car than they do, but on the other hand they have more experience. Just keep reading on here and asking questions after you learn some, people will help you if you ask an intelligent question.

PS I've got a cable or two laying around that I need to get rid of, if you're interested shoot me a PM and I'll hook you up

Re: Getting started

Was searching and not really finding the answers I was looking for but instead of starting a new thread, I’ll just resurrect this one. I was doing some reading and research on TunerCat so I can log/tune my own car when at the track. I was originally looking at LT1edit but TunerCat seems to be cheaper and not vin locked. Anyway, the main question is this: other then the TunerCat software do I need the Pocket ROMulator or Pocket Programmer like they say when they send you to xtronics.com or just an cable from AKM? The car is a '95 OBDI with OBDII connector. Also does it matter if I purchase the Tuner or RT Tuner? What one do you guys prefer?

Confused on what's needed.

Re: Getting started

AS I understand With rt tuner you don't need to turn off your car and re program the whole pcm for a small change. Real Time tunning. So i guess it could be better since it's less time wasted changing parameters. I'm really interested in this thread too because i'm basically starting to tune, but took on the job already and i'm learning little by little playing around with the tunes.
